BB is 68mm but before i went down the new bottom bracket route i tried the chainring on the inside edge

new project bike is nearly done but when i went to tighten the chainset down it wont go in nice and flush to the frame, i can already see that the chainline wont be rideable like this.
Is my bottom bracket too long or am i better off mounting the chainring on the inside rather than the outside edge of the chainset-spider-bit (<insert correct term here)
the bottom bracket is the original square taper that came on my pug and the cranks are same as the white ones on here http://www.charliethebikemonger.com/userimages/procart7.htm

just bought an old pug off ebay as a project to convert to fixed gear

the more i read up on it the more i think peugeot could have been a mistake, how do i know if its french threaded ro english and how much hassle isit gonna be if its french

think ill take your advice on this. don tthink i can do it to my old mans former pride and joy. ill ride this as is and look to do another from scratch on the cheap

he hasnt ridden it for years so he was glad that someone would get some use out of it.
he loved it so much it never made it into the shed and its lived in his bedroom for the last 15 years or so
