I have a 50mile old pair of these if anyone wants them? [now taken by sLimJim]

I think they are awful - like riding around clinging to two wobbly toilet rolls.

Basic choice at this level of spend is Gaggia Classic or for a bit more the Rancillio Silvia (£300-350)
I've been meaning to take the plunge on a Silvia myself after being very impressed by the one they had in a ski chalet I stayed in a few seasons back (and it must've taken a hammering over the years there!).
They seem to be nearer £400 now though - or am I just looking in the wrong places?

I might even gets me some of these...

... mebbe accompanied with a big arrow sticker saying "Look Mum, no pedals (braks, saddle, wheel - delete as appropriate)!"
-
Not many bikes with no saddles get stolen to boot.
Good point. I wonder how many potential thieves this deters?
On the odd occasions I take my front wheel with me I always think I'm doing it to save the wheel itself. It's never really occurred to me that this may also be the only reason the rest of the bike is still there when I get back! (yes, I'm an idiot)

I think I've got one knocking around you could have. However I seem to recall I mangled the notches on the cups pretty badly when I removed it. I reckon you could still install it ok - but I couldn't guarantee you'd be able to get it out again...
I guess it depends whether your definition of a Beater is the same as mine - i.e. a POS that you wouldn't mind locking up in Hackney for a week!
-
I'm well overdue for an eye test/consultation - are all opticians much of a muchness in this respect? I always seem to end up in a Vision Express out of sheer laziness but can't help thinking there must be a better option (particularly as I could be in the market for either new glasses, lenses or - the horror - laser treatment)?

another +1 for the Smart (1/2 watt) rear.
My Blackburn 3 and 4 are great, and are possibly brighter when viewed head on, but the Smart still seems to attract more attention. The bracket is also the most unobtrusive and the whole unit is just so dinky and simple.
It's also available here for £8.99...

It's still usable on the Blackberry, at least it should be. What bit doesn't work specifically?
I wasn't able to navigate the homepage or individual forums as the headers were all obscured (as if on top of each other) - although the threads themselves were ok once I had linked directly to them.
However I've had a play around and switched to Firefox and all seems to be well again...
Cheers :-)

anyone staying up to watch the superbowl tonight.? I usually lose interest by the third quarter but I have a few very unlikely bets on tonight to keep things interesting.
Yup. Waiting for the match to start before I start punting though...
Latifah to rap America the Beautiful is already down as a loser ;-)

I'm running a SS Brompton - I bought it that way though rather than converted it.
Been pretty impressed with it so far. For the first 500 yards I thought it was awful and that it would quickly be the death of me. 10 miles later I realised I had cycled the whole way with a big grin on my face and wondered if I would ever use my 'proper' bike inside zone 2 again!
-
Blimey - for the last two years I've been assuming it was just me being cack-handed! I could never understand why such a seemingly well respected pump had such an odd fitting for presta.
I'd be interested to know how you get on with the replacement...
