Im attempting a conversion on an old Raleigh Sun Solo, but would like to get myself so tools which would be upto the job of stripping everything off the frame.

Do i need any bike specific tools to remove the BB etc?

I have a chain breaker and other general maintence aswell as a tool kit capable of tearing apart cars.

I recently picked up a sun solo, which i planned to convert into a fixed wheel bike.

Im now very tempted to put this on hold and pickup a specialized tricross ss instead, due to the discounted price it at atm.

Are there any weak components to the tricross that i should think about upgrading if i take the plunge?

I picked up a Sun Solo 59cm bike today (for free!).

The frame and forks are in good condition so will be keeping these, however there rest of the bike will be rebuilt.

I am looking for 2nd hand parts to replace the current parts on the bike converting it to a fixie.

Parts im looking for;

• Dura-ace front brake
  
• BB, cranks and chain
  
• Deep v wheelset (inc. fixed rear)
  
• Handlebars - drops
  
• headset and possibly step

Im off to pickup my new (free) fixed wheel bike tomorrow.

The plan is to stip it down, and refurb the frame. My original plan was to respray the frame(have resprayed cars in the past), but am thinking of doing a much cheaper and quicker job instead using vinyl tape.

My budget would be £20 for materials and wondered if anyone had attempted this in the past? I am aware of 'what a cnut' bike. I plan to tape the frame and then laquer it. I am not fussed greatly over the finish as its a daily ride, which will be chained up by a station for most of the day.

Any ideas for something different. Im thinking white frame, with the black wheels, cranks and handle bars?

The guy i was speaking to (personal trainer) was mainly interested in running/sprinting and general appearence training. He said if used correctly, it was around 4x more effective then standard weight training.

Ive got an induction into this training on tuesday, so will report back in due course.

Just been to my new gym for my induction and have booked in for a session for using their power plate trainers.

Has anyone had any experience of using these for your 'cycling' muscles? Or are they more of a gimick for flash gyms?

So once you have removed both of your brakes how are you planning on stopping?

Im interested in going to Herne Hill Velodrome for a track session.

I have been having a look on their website and see that there are open sessions on saturday mornings (which id like to attend). Has anyone got an idea of the price and length of these sessions?

Also, i currently ride a geared road/race bike, which has front and rear breaks. I understand they do not allow brakes to be used on the track, so would i be able to ride of these were simply disconnected? or would a fixed wheel be the best bet.

If i get the chance i am very tempted to pop down to my local LBS and ride a basic road bike for a comparsion.

I have riden 105s and Ultegra bikes, but these have been on turbo trainers and i really could not feel a difference over my dura-ace bike.

What i'd like to know, is if the two bikes were given to the same rider how much difference in performance would be seen? This would be based on the bikes being the correct size and fitment for the rider, but with different groupsets, frames/weights.

The reason i ask, is that i purchased a carbon ex world championship race/road bike, kitted out with dura-ace gears, fsa carbon pro crankset and other lightweight/performance goodies. I ride this daily, but am very tempted at times to sell up and buy a fixed bike and another road bike (more basic, ie. 105 groupset), but dont want to take a backstep in comfort and average speed (for example).

So from your experience, how much does a well built and kitted out bike effect your performance?

Unfortunately the purchase of a 2nd hand Fuji Track fell through so im now on the lookout for a fixed bike again.

Ideally, i am looking for a 62cm frame with velocity deep wneels (or similar), aerospoke front would also be good.

Budget is upto £500 (upper limit, no more at all), although im quite happy to get something needing a lot of TLC (e.g. respray) for much less and spend some time on it.
