MAte of mine is after a MTB for his misses, he's on a tight budget, nothing silly fancy, anyone got any recommendations? I should think it will be used for nothing more than family rides on country lanes, I was gonna recommend Decathlon? Or, horror of horrors, Halfords.!! Did see a bargain at Merlin, but then realised it was just frame and forks!!!
I have a GT Agressor 1, cost £600 new, asking £300. I bought this while i was making my decision on a full suspension yet still wanted to be out on the trails, afer all don't want to fork out lots of money when you've not explored every avenue..
The GT has Rock Shox Tora u-turn front fork's 80 - 130mm (i think is the range can check for exact travell distance)
Hays Sole disc brakes front and rear
27 speed Deore Lx & rear / front mech
LX shifters
Alex rims with standard tyres from new..i've used this for around two months then it's stood in my garage because i bought a full suspension, now the winters truely set in i'm looking to buy a single speed.
if your really interested let me know i can provide full and detailed spec's including pictures..

Thanks for the info buddy, it's just as you laer found out not quite right for me..
On the longer frames 33/18 seems to get just the right tension,so no need for a device, just put some XT shifters back mech and front mech on running just two cranks rings on the front, may run it for a while then sell it. feel free to give us a bell tommorow.
I'd buy your giant if you managed to get hold of some pop lock front forks and hope brakes on it :-)))..
i guess the chain thing just works out ok as long as you get the length of the chain right.., might give ya a call at the end of the week, i'm out for most of the week on work or on me bike :)

Bubba just kitting it out with XT as we speak.
Very nice !..
i'm chasing for a single speed hardtail at the mo, the only diferences i just wanted remote pop lock on the forks, and some wide riser bars, the only thing left me being a tart an all was some hope mni's or m4's on small rotors (140 - 160mm), then it would have been perfect for me :-).. My full susser is being killed in the really wet muddy woodland rides at the mo..
About your gt how did you tension up the chain ?, i see most people can tension it up by having horizontal drop out's but when you have vertical drop out's a huge pecentace of people fit some form of jockey wheel to tension up the chain.., is it easy to get the rear wheel off and on ?, might give ya another call about it.
p.s.. sorry to hijack your thomson bike thread...

Just wanted to add i spoke to KingCutter the other day with regards to a bike he was selling on Fleebay, again the description was not great which is why i had a chat with him to find out the exact parts make model type etc.., turns out that the bike looked good (the Blue Giant MTB hardtail) but some of the parts where not really what i was looking for... I was pondering over putting a bid in but when weighing up the additional cost to get the parts i wanted on it i decided not to make a bid..
what i'm getting at here is that not everyone is great at giving descriptions, but if you want something specific which is not present then ask for it..
I like the thomson bike but it won't stand up to hard beating off road mtb tracks that i go on (or at least personally i don't think the wheels would take a hammering), it's ideal for a road commuting bike :-), but i'm lazy and use the train to get to work or car...
anyway just my five pence worth is i've spoken to King Cutter where i had the impression he was a genuine nice guy.

Sorry to hear about the bad news !, i to have hit a hole at night (without street lights) which infact mademe loose grip on my bars and took my feet clean off the pedals, i was dangling there sitting on the saddle with my forearms on the bars lol..., luckily i had a jump bike at the time with double butted wheels so no damage to bike and i managed to stay on the bike so no damage to me....
hope you get it sorted out, there is nothing worse that the council not doing there job, i mean we pay anout for the road's to be well maintained.
Right just in case word of mouth is great :-)..
i'm after getting on a single speed (or could be real lazy and get the single speed look shimano hub (8 speed afine).
anyway here goes...
MTB style bike..
looking for any Alu, Steel or tit frame hardtail style
Front forks around 80-130mm travel with pop lock on bars (ideally rock shox or marzocci)
prefer Hope or shimano brakes / rotors but not really fussed to much..
wheels 26" fully sealed bearings
gears/bb well looking for 32/18 type of setup, or as above a pre built wheel with shimano alfine 8 speed hub gear.
once i got this setup i means i'll have full suss hardtail with single speed or single speed style and then i'll be aiming for a road bke single speed, but it takes time and money don't grow on trees lol.
serious though any help on parts or full setup would be interested.
