In August 2004, lorry-driver William Ishani was fined £1,000 and banned for a year for causing the death of a family of four, including a nine-month-old baby.

In an attempt to cut down on the number of killings caused by speeding cyclists, Bournemouth council have decided to make good use of our tax money to help enforce the 10mph speed limit on the promenade.

Did anyone see they are planning to have officers with speed guns on the promenade to stop cyclists breaking the 10mph speed limit? It said they don't have any power as bikes don't have speedometers but they will lecture cyclists and hand them a leaflet on the dangers of cycling too fast.
Sounds like a complete waste of time, effort and money to me.
Everyone knows that speeding cyclists kill more than speeding drivers. Oh wait... -
Yeah was pretty windy, some hairy moments going 35-40 downhill with a side wind, luckily there wasn't much slogging into the wind. Just checked my computer, 3h28m ride time, plus stops to eat cereal bars and once to hide from the rain. Not a bad time at all.
Yes you can print in colour at uni, its 25p per A4 page, the printer is in the print room on the first floor of Poole house. Didn't I already tell you this?
Probably, lol :(. Bit expensive, hmpf. This is the earliest I've been up voluntarily in several months. :STry and beat 3 hours on the way back? :D

Bump.
I feel this guy should get some more credit and press coverage. Just had a look at his sponsorship page and he's only raised £38,000 - a very nice amount, but I think he deserves more for such a big achievement.

120 miles a day, that's a lot by anyone's standards. Also look at his youtube page, he looks totally knackered.

BTW, should anyone be interested. I used 4 major survey technologies in the last fortnight... and if you're considering any Zoomerang is the best of the bunch. However, if PDF reporting is your thing... abandon hope and write your own. Even Zoomerangs PDF export was dire. Lord knows how they all got that so wrong, but they did.
Did you try surveygizmo? Used it for my dissertation any it's pretty good. -

o.k maths/computer geeks, if I was doing 40mph today on 75 gi, what does that make my cadence?
75 gear inches * 0.0254 * pi = 5.985 metres development
40 miles = 64,373.76 metres
64,373.76 / 5.985 = 10755.85 revolutions
10,755.85 revs / 60 minutes = 179.264 RPMor
(miles * 1,609.344) / (GI * 0.0254π) / 60 = 179.272 RPM to be precise

Anyone up for this?
http://www.londonfgss.com/thread21530.html
(Don't worry Uni will be over by then)I spoke to Luke about this a couple of days ago, but he was adamant on not being of close proximity to "a bunch of hippies". Considering we didn't end up meeting the guys from London on IoW, this could be cool. Only about 40 miles apparently.
I'm up for that. -

I don't have any intention to cash in or sell out, but just fucking try and tell me that with the time, effort, skill and devotion that I've put in, that I don't have the right to. Just fucking try. You're so wrong.
Why not implement a banner advert or google ads, and have the £3/year thing for people who want an ad-free site? Win-win surely? I can't see anyone refusing to use the site just because there is an advert on it, though I could understand why you might not want to "sell out" as it were.
Also, if there are people using the classifieds forum commercially to make a profit for themselves (rather than most people who are trying to get rid of stuff they don't need), they should be required to pay subs.
I actively think that you SHOULD make a fair profit from the time you invest into the site, from users' point of view, it provides you with an incentive to make the site even better. :)
Also, merchandise... I might just buy an LFGSS double-sized mug (or three) if there was one available. :)

Haven't read this thread but what I think you will find is:
The results to the poll are totally skewed, all of the regulars answered it and the VAST majority of users didn't.
I use the classifieds very infrequently, such that £3 would make eBay a better option...
I think your best bet would be to sell merchandise (you could probably employ a specialist website to actually make and sell the merchanise, so it would be not much work for you).
Also, adverts... why not send a few emails to the big ones (Wiggle, CRC, Parkers etc) and see if they will cough up some money. To advertise on a site like this is a unique opportunity for them...
P.S. I'd be quite likely to get one of these for £15, but unlikely to pay £3 for a subscription.
You're saying "people can drive at the speed limit if they want, but should accept the responsibility of their actions".
I disagree with that. It should not be up to drivers to decide whether they can drive dangerously or not. Many drivers, particularly women (not paying full attention) and old people (slow reaction time), though some men as well, are not capable of driving safely even at the speed limit.
Might sound a bit draconian, but I believe anyone over the age of 70 should not be allowed to drive, at all. We, the taxpayers, should provide taxies instead. I also believe that cars should have trackers in them which automatically fine anyone who drives above the speed limit, repeatedly doesn't indicate when turning, etc.
This would also allow the speed limit to be dynamic (e.g. slower round corners, near schools etc). Thirdly I believe everyone should retake their driving test every three years. I also believe people should undergo a driving 'endurance' test about a year after they pass the normal test... driving round for about an hour to see if they got into any bad habits, not signally, driving dangerously etc.
A U.S. government study calculated the "Average Economic Cost per Death" in 2006 at $4,000,000. This is due to the fact that they cannot generate $100k a year for the economy anymore, because they're dead. There were 3,592 deaths on the road in the UK last year. Multiply those two numbers together gives you $14.4 billion. That's just the economic cost alone, let alone all of the pain and suffering caused. That's also not including people who are not killed but injured in a car accident.
Cars need to be taken more seriously, and the government needs to stop wasting money on retarded little schemes like in my original post.
