The classic method framebulders use to get truly stuck aluminium seatposts out is to melt them out - the aluminium melts before the braze or tubing gets affected as long as you watch what you are doing with the oxy-acetylene flame. A few weeks ago I had a seatpost stuck in an MTB frame that had over 10in stuck inside the seat tube - there is then no alternative to melting it. Of course the paint does get destroyed.
With micro-adjust seatpins most will eventually come out using a vice to hold the pin and levering the frame around - there are various freeing agents avaiable from car accessory shops that definitely help the process.

MAXI SPORTS ex-TEAM CASTORAMA FRAME 1993
Seat Tube (ctt): 58cm, ctc 49cm
Top Tube (ctc): 53cm
Rear dropout width: 130mm
Wheel size: Sprints or 700C with a brake drop of 45mm
Bottom bracket threads: English
Tubing: Columbus
Frame number: DL 1 93 1749
This is a truly stunning frame from the 1993 Castomrama team and was ridden that year by Laurent Desbiens. Although originally built as time trialling frame this frame uses standard 700C or sprint wheels front and rear. It could conceivably be used as a fixie if you’re lucky with the chain length as the vertical dropouts are slightly angled. You are definitely not going to see another frame like this anywhere. £265 onohttp://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r77/hilarystone/Maxi-sports-TT-DL.jpg

Offered for sale is a NOS unused 1980s 61cm (ctc) De Vos road/training frame with a 57cm ctc top tube. De Vos was a small Belgian bike bike shop that commissioned frames from a local builder. It takes 700C wheels and with guards would take a 28mm-32mm tyre - brake drop is approx 54mm. Rear dropout width is 126mm. Bottom bracket threads are British. It is built from a good quality tubing - could well be Reynolds 531 as it takes 27.0mm seatpost and weighs only 2040g which is light for a frame of this size. Rear dropouts are Shimano horizontal with mudguard eyes and would be ideal for a fixie conversion. A set of De Vos decals will be supplied with the frame. It takes Allen nut fitting brakes and the gear cable routing is under the bottom bracket. This is a great chance to have a new frame at a very modest price and then painted in whatever colour scheme you fancy. I can deliver to Argos Cycles here in Bristol free of charge; they are one of the best frame painters in the country and their prices can be found at http://www.argoscycles.com/renovation-pricelist.htm £55 onohttp://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r77/hilarystone/De-Vos-lge-2.jpg

Hi everyone,
Some more nice goodies for sale. The items are all in Bristol - I will be at Herne Hill on Saturday and meet up there Saturday morning. Otherwise I can ship frames or post parts very easily. Frames cost £14 to ship within the UK by DHL.
DAVE RUSSELL ROAD FRAME 25in c1980
Seat Tube (ctt): 25in
Top Tube (ctc): 23in
Rear dropout width: 122mm
Frame tubing: Reynolds 531 DB
Frame number: 1683
This is a very nicely detailed road frame built by Dave Russell (who died last year) from the end of the 70s/beginning of the 80s. It is in very sound condition - some would build it up as it is but most I think would want to refinish it. There are no dents or other damage. Clearances are pretty much standard 700C/sprint (taking a brake with a 45mm drop on 700C/sprint). It would convert quite easily to a fixie with the Campag horizontal dropouts.

Seat Tube (ctt): 23in
Top Tube (ctc): 23in
Rear dropout width: 120mm
Frame tubing: Reynolds 531 DB
This a lateish Holdsworth Monsoon with slightly more fancy lugs and is much rarer than the standard Monsoon. There is no fork with this frame but I do have a picture of what the fork looks like ( I had one of these frames several years ago for sale). The frame is very sound and just needs repainting. Decals are available from http://www.hlloydcycles.com/ I can deliver it free of charge for the successful bidder to Argos Cycles who I consider to be one of the best frame painters in the UK. Details on Argos’ prices can be found at http://www.argoscycles.com/renovation-pricelist.htm They could also build a suitable fork for it. SALSA LA RAZA Small/medium c1996 46cm (like 50-52cm)
Seat Tube (ctc): 46cm ctc (50cm ctt)
Top Tube (ctc): 52cm
Rear dropout width: 130mm
Wheel size: Sprints or 700C
Bottom bracket threads: English
The La Raza tig welded road frame made its appearance in late 1992. The original Raza was a pioneer of the sloping top tube design - Ross Shafer founder of Salsa was quoted as saying ‘I just put the tubes where they need to go rather than where history dictates’. The frames were built from a mix of Columbus tubing – it must have been pretty light gauges as this frame weighs just 1.60kg. I consider the La Raza frame to be one of the classic frames of the 90s - they are exceptionally sweet to ride and when we tested one on Cycling Plus magazine in 1992 we rated it as one of the best handling frames we had encountered. This frame is in excellent condition - there are no dents and the paint is almost perfect. This frames comes complete with all carbon fork - the headset is NOT included. And they are as rare as hen’s teeth in the UK...

Rear dropout width: 120mm
Wheel size: Sprints or 700C (brake drop of approx 42mm)
Bottom bracket threads: English
Reynolds 531 double-butted tubing
Carlton track frames are extremely highly regarded from this period - world championships were won on frames from the Carllton Worksop works and Reg Harris when making his comeback also rode a Worksop built frame albeit in Raleigh colours. This frame is an all out track frame with close clearances and steep frame angles though the front fork crown is drilled. It is in very sound condition but does need a complete renovation - some one has trimmed the ends of the rear dropouts off - these are easily repaired by a good framebuilder. Carlton decals are available from http://www.hlloydcycles.com/ I can deliver it free of charge for the successful bidder to Argos Cycles who I consider to be one of the best frame painters in the UK. Its very rare for a frame to have structural issues - generally its fillet brazed or tig welded frames that suffer the most where the water cannot get out. That Dawes will be fine though pitting on the surface may show through the powder coating...
Bare metal frames can be clearcoated though eventually water moisture will get under the clearcoat... -
There is no such thing as correct fork offset for a particular head angle - it depends on how you want your frame to handle. A short fork offset with a given head tube angle will give a frame that is more stable at speed and slower to react. Conversely a longer fork offset with a given head tube angle will give a less stable frame at higher speeds. However it will be slower to react to steering by leaning. These days tandems are mostly built with head angles in the 71-73 degree range with quite a lot of fork offset - tandems have plenty of inbuilt stability from their very long wheelbase but are twitchy if if they can be lean steered easily - eg when the rear rider leams outr to see what is in front... Stayer bikes (track bikes used behind motorbikes have forks which point backwards - many cyclists on first seeing one of these think they must be very hard to ride - they are not - the negative fork offset means they love to travel in straight or a near straight line and are incredibly stable at 50-60mph which is what motorpace races are held at.
The conclusion to all this is that the front end frame geometry depends on your taste and the use to which the bike is put... But for the road with an frame that does not depart too far from average size say 54-60cm will not go wrong with about 73 degree head tube angle and 40-45mm of fork offset. Drawing out your frame on cm squared paper at 1/2 or 1/3 scale will help you check on toeclip overlap if that is an issue for you, for standover height if that is an issue though I think both of these are not a serious problem except in smaller than average frames for most riders. -
This should be a very simple conversion - the rear dropout width will probably be 126mm but it is easy to squeeze the dropouts down to 120mm suitable for most track hubs. I suspect this was a frame Rotrax bought in but it should serve pretty well as a fixie. If you use 700C wheels the bottom bracket height might be a little low but 165mm cranks and/or pedals with better than average cornering clearance (with clips and straps Shimano's older aero pedals are ideal) or SPDs there should not be a problem.

Two more that definitely need including are George Longstaff Cycles - http://www.longstaffcycles.com/ and Dave Yates - http://www.daveyatescycles.co.uk/ who still build steel frames.
They are the two builders I would go to if I wanted a steel frame built...
