Happened to be in Harrods today - their Rock Racing ones are not just many kinds of ghastly, but originally sold for £325:

Some simple tips that helped me when I started swimming for tri:
If you're getting a proper reach, your upper arm should brush your ear on entry
Then reach forward and glide before pulling down
Pulling through properly, your thumb should brush the side of your trunks on exit
Breathe every 2 strokes, and do at least a quarter of your training breathing to the other side
Don't plan on kicking much - you'll need your legs later on
For a mass start, do not be afraid to punch, kick, bite or stab anyone who gets in yr way - there's no bonus points for etiquette -
Thompson's acting like Murdoch, sorry, Cameron, is already in power - 'see, we're beating ourselves up, you don't have to'.
6Music gives us new and live music 24/7/365 for about a quarter of the price of Eastenders, and less than Graham Norton and Jonathan Ross. I think the price is comparable to one of the new Portland Stone vending machines in the revamped Broadcasting House. Are any commercial radio stations threatened or compromised by 6Music or the Asian Network? Are they heckers. In fact, they won't even need to consider comparable programming to compete with the BBC. That's 2 big constituencies that won't be catered for at all.
I'm hoping it's a really clever double bluff, the publicity will boost the threatened stations, the public will get back behind the Beeb, and the results of the public consultation will mean the Trust won't axe them.

thought about crabon forks, then saw. http://www.bustedcarbon.com/
That's a chamber of horrors site that seems to have half my bikes on it - holding my Colnago and Look 486 v close after seeing what can happen to them...

It's relatively OK until the A1 junction, that A1 junction is carnage at the best of times, I can't imagine riding it at night in the rain! After that there's that long slog uphill through the tunnel followed by miles and miles of dual carriageways. Did you ride all along the bit of the A406 that has junctions with A12/M11 etc? If so, fuck me is all I can say, people don't hang about on those roads.
Yeah, tose bits were the nadir. The first few miles weren't too bad up to about level with Kilburn, the M1 turn-off was closed as there was an accident with a car transporter and a bin lorry, so a lot of traffic didn't turn off, but some stretches were very quiet, in fairness. Stayed on A406 the full way till about Ilford.

Have you ever been around the N.Circular before (in any mode of transport)?
Did you not think even patialy round that it was incredibly dangerous and maybe take another route? Not really familiar wi N Circ - haven't been in Ldn that long, thought it'd be like an extension of the S Circ. Yes, realised it was pretty ghastly, but once you're committed, you're committed.
Riding a well lit Kona Paddy wagon, no pics, sorry. Couldn't do Woolwich Ferry as it doesn't run past 8pm, never mind midnight! Altho did stop in Woolwich to order a well-deserved pizza on the way home.
Finished with a puncture, when the tube valve failed and the spring came right thru my Gatorskin - wtf?

On weds night, I thought of a little cycling challenge, and went out to do it - looping central Ldn by the S Circular and N Circular. Don't know if this is something many people have done, but it's there if you fancy it.
Started at 8pm, joining A205 SC at Eltham. Raining and dark, but that's not too much of a problem in SE Ldn, roads are quiet, and the biggest issue is people coming out of side roads without looking.
After about 25 miles, crossed Kew Bridge to the N Circ at 10pm, and it immediately started getting tricky. 3 lanes the whole way, lots of on and off ramps, rain still coming down in Biblical doses. Late night means less traffic, but with continued heacy rain, faster traffic, tireder drivers and drunker passengers leaning out to give their critical opinion of your cycling, it was very deeply unpleasant. Lots of near misses (yes, Royal Mail are the worst kind of homicidal cunts), blaring horns, glass-filled gutters and potholes.
From around Ilford, it got a lot easier, as there were tailbacks, so could just sail between the stationary traffic. However, couldn't do the full loop as Blackwall Tunnel s'bound is closed at night, so had to cut off to Isle of Dogs and the Greenwich Foot Tunnel.
Overall, about 67 miles including ride to join S Circ, took 4hr 15m. Terrifying, uninspiring, dangerous.
To do the challenge properly, you'd have to ignore all the bits where bikes are banned, including Blackwall Tunnell (I managed most of the 'no bike' bits, and they weren't really any worse than the rest of the N Circ).
I recommend you don't do it, it's not nice.

Last time I was there, got back from a harrowing 3-hr tour of Auschwitz in -10 degrees, and met up with a bunch of Scots in the pub that night. Conversation as follows:
Scot - 'Have you been to Auschwitz yet?'
Me - 'Yes, today - hard to believe, wasn't it?'
S - 'Aye, can you believe it was that cheap? what a bargain! Something like that back home would cost a fortune!'
They just don't help themselves sometimes.

I've bust scaphoid twice too. First playing footie, second being run over in May - by a fud who's now in jail, so there's some decent karma. If it doesn't heal properly, it'll really fuck up, but you can turbo / spin bike / whatever, as well as run. I'm still at 80% mobility now, bloodflow thing means it takes aeons.
But in short, HTFU.

Saw a guy wiped out one dark, murky eve last year by a guy from the far lane in oncoming traffic turning across him. Slick looking bike, trendy dark camo gear, but no lights or helmet. I stopped to help, and the driver said to the rider 'If you'd been wearing what he's wearing, I'd have seen you'.
Course it's the driver's fault, but your call if you choose to give them the excuse. I got good lights and a mix of hi-viz and reflective stuff depending on the conditions. But then, I don't look as cool as the guy that got totalled.
