The government's action is inadequate. It only applies to lorries on the road since 2000, there will still be over 100,000 out there with poor mirrors.
They have not included the class VI mirror which is on new lorries which gives a view in front of the driver's cab. These are particularly important for saving pedestrian lives - and some cyclists. They are not planning to enforce this from March, only when lorries come up for MOT, which may not be for another 14 months. In London the police have told us that they will try to enforce the new rules from this year.
I believe that it is untrue to say that the government could not have brought forward implementation by at least 12 months, the Belgians did it five years ago!
quoting the government's response... ... ...
The UK is implementing this measure through changes to national legislation, in accordance with the timescale set out in Directive 2007/38/EC. This requires vehicles within scope of the Directive to be retrofitted with wide angle mirrors, and a close proximity mirror on the passenger side by 31 March 2009. Vehicles will be checked at annual test from 1 April onwards to ensure that the mirrors comply with the relevant requirements.
We are not permitted to bring forward the date of application set out in the Directive but will be implementing the requirements at the earliest opportunity permitted under EU law. The Directive applies in all Member States of the EU, and will affect the majority of large goods vehicles.

Those of you that were asking about Hanson, now that charlie lloyd (posting as Charlie_lcc) is on here, there is no need for me to duplicate, Charlie will give an answer here Monday if he can. Right Charlie?
Yes I'll do that if I get the info. As yet I cannot send private messages 'cause I am still in the 'nursery' section on this forum.

Hey, I don't know if this is useful, but via my job I have links to some parts of the Olympic build and some of the (plant) training that is taking place for it in and around London. I could happily speak to the guys that run these centres/sites and ask if they would dish out some leaflets/info/stick up a poster so that any HGV drivers coming on site get to read some of this stuff. Let me know.
Yes, really useful. Cynthia Barlow from RoadPeace (Alix McVittie's mum) and the LCC have been working on the Olympic people for a year or so. This week they had a press launch with the VOSA (trucking regulators) of a scheme to give out thousands of the plastic fresnel lenses that give truckers a better view of whats on their left side. I saw them fit loads of these to tipper drivers at the main Olympic site.
If your contacts work at other sites and with the plant training then we can get some info to them as well. pm coming -

Hi, I just joined.
I've been cycling around London for a while. Currently on a Carlton, Corsa Strada. One of my neighbours had it FIXED about 20 years ago and then never rode it. His new wife wanted to throw it away so he sold it to me for £10. I had to build a new back wheel but the rest is ok, it needs a new dust cap for a pedal. -
I share the concerns about ghost bikes and dealing with wishes of family/friends of victims.
I think the ghost bike system works voluntarily, if family and friends want it, the ghost bike website tells them how to go about it. For London there are two sites http://www.ghostbikes.org/london and http://www.ghostcycle.org.uk/It might an idea to do a load of them at once for a limited period, then to take them down if we don't know that the family want the ghost bike to stay. There is already a ghost bike for Anthony Smith (killed in April) on Middleton Road E8 by Kingsland road.
Vikcy McCreery was (no 2 on list) was killed in May 2004, going north on Blackfriars bridge, about a third of the way across. I think her husband is away travelling at the moment. Another woman was run down on Blackfriars last month but I don't think she was killed.
There are five chances to get into a large HGV tomorrow and get the driver's view of cyclists.
The City Police are offerring to cancel Fixed Penalty Notices if cyclists attend their event.
The Lorries will be at these spots from 7 till 10am:
Spital Square E1 (City / Tower Hamlets)
Finsbury Circus EC2 (City)
Queen Mothers Gate, South Carriage Drive, Hyde Park (Westminster)
Eddystone Road Bridge, off Brockley Road (Lewisham)
A lunchtime (12-3pm) demo will also take place at St Pauls Cathedral.
