The open letter says "Bus lanes do not constitute cycling provision: more cyclists are killed or seriously injured by buses than they are by lorries in London.". I don't know about seriously injured but more cyclists are killed by buses than HGVs? Isn't that patently untrue?
Yes, absolutely untrue. It is one of those internet myths which needs de-bunking. I have tried to do that in my comment to Hackney People on Bikes

Phew, thankfully things have cooled down a bit in here. It is probably healthy to have this sort of bust up now and again, as long as we continue talking. If people had made the connection between @cyclelove and his blog he might have got the respect he deserves.
We really should be arguing about the quality of our streets/cyclelanes instead of blasting away at each other. In my view the real problem is the crap quality of the 'cycle' infrastructure that is put in, far too often all the money is wasted by leading people to the same (or worse) dangerous junctions where most of the crashes happen. About 10% of cyclist deaths in London happen to riders at junctions on routes with separated cycle paths, I find that to be a frighteningly high percentage. I worry that the 'segregated' route on Stratford High street has set up half a dozen very hazardous junctions, before you get to the mess at Bow roundabout.
The idea of segregation being the solution for all cycling problems has been vastly oversold, especially to people who don't cycle. It doesn't follow the segregation is necessarily bad, I think the planned East West route along the Embankment could be better for everyone and will attract more people to cycling, but it will not be worth it if they don't do something prevent these new cyclists being mashed by lorries when they get to the Tower Hill and Aldgate one-way traffic systems.
The video of 10 bus stop by-passes from David Hembrow made me weep (again). What relevance to those designs have to the narrow bits of Kingsland road where there is very little pavement space, less than 12 metres road width used by almost 1000 cyclists and 5-6000 bus passengers in peak hour. There are very complex problems there which cannot be sorted with trivial solutions. -

Crossrail lorry driver charged over cycle death of NHS porter
It is very late to hear this, apparently the driver was charged in July this year, 8 months after the crash.
We know that this crash had a strong impact on the lorry company involved and its drivers. They have since taken on extra driver training including expert cycle training. -
If this is a persistent problem it sounds like twisted spokes and/or not enough tension. If there is a twist in one or two spokes then it easily untwists on the road unbalancing the tension.
With double butted spokes you need to take extra care as the spokes want to twist as you tighten up. Light oil on threads and seating help. I use sticky paper to put little flags on the spokes before starting. If they all line up when stress-relieved at the end then none of the spokes are twisted. A professional builder should be able to do that by feel alone.

@charlie_lcc can you email me a link for a half vis jacket, I'm not a fan of high vis jackets as they could be too bright for urban cycling and so a half vis jacket would be awesome but nobody seems to sell them.
Half price if you order one with your ticket to the CycleNation Campaigners Conference on 22nd November

I don't think we are saying blaze is the best thing out there. Or even the best bike light. As people suggested, this is advertising, it helps us keep going. There are a few products which LCC would not accept advertising from, Blaze is not one of them.
We are also interested in members' feedback on this type of advert.Personally I am not a fan of Blaze but some people think they are wonderful and have bought them for all the family. I think 300 lumens is far to bright for urban cycling, users should be told to keep them on the low power setting all the time - the batteries last 2-3 times longer.

is that a donut with a cadbury cream egg in it?
http://www.kitchendaily.com/recipe/cadbury-egg-doughnuts
Ingredients
1 recipe of your favorite pizza dough4 Cadbury Creme Eggs powdered sugar, for dusting4 cup vegetable oil, for fryingDirections
Freeze the Cadbury Eggs for at least 4 hours. (This prevents them from melting in the fryer.)
Divide pizza dough into four small balls. Flatten each into a disk no larger than the palm of your hand (trim any excess). Wrap each Cadbury Egg in a disk of dough, rolling well and sealing the edges.
Carefully drop each doughnut into hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes.
Remove from oil, and drain on a paper towel. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired, and eat while warm. -

Good spot. The bottom of the 4th seems to have been left behind by the rise of surrounding areas, it can only get better. Does the small bridge work as a commuter/connector route? The Quai Rapee area is bike hostile so locating on a usable by-pass would help.
Wherever you are good bike parking is essential, maybe buy an old van or pick-up, cut it open and install bike hangers.
I think you should do some interesting beer and wine, say it's only available with food and set the price above local boozers.
Good coffee is sure to be a winner, compared to what the locals drink. Tea can be interesting, I was in France last week and good tea was easier to find than in London. There is a tea shop opening on Broadway Market so it must be trendy. -

Read Nicole Cooke's book instead.
The best sporting autobiography I've read
also a feminist critique of professional cycling by the British rider who won more than all the men.

There is talk of Michael's family starting a private prosecution. There may also be action over the police not following guidelines to refer to Crown Prosecution Service for a fatal collision. LCC and CTC could be asking for donations through the Cyclists Defence Fund to help.
