I'm building up my first attempt at a geared bike, and have hit a stumbling block with the rear derailleur.
Having screwed it in to the hanger, I had some real problems getting it into the correct position without rubbing on the chainstay. So I removed it, fiddled with it and screwed it back in, only to notice that a metal coil was being pushed out of the hanger by the bolt on the derailleur. This was eventually completely dislodged (and mangled) as a result of which the hanger is too large for the bolt.
Is this a common thing, or a quick fix previously adopted? It is now not possible to attach the derailleur!
As such, is there an equally quick fix to sort this, or is it time for the LBS (which would be a shame, having sorted everything else!)
Many thanks
