How much is all this costing? To be honest on a 501 frame I wouldn't bother, unless it has some special sentimental value for you.
hi mate yeah i know im on a strict budget as i know theres not much point ploughing cash into a 24year old raleigh 501,
it doesnt have sentimental value to me but it ticks all my boxes,- had to be a raleigh
- love the fact that its the aerospace tubing used on the raleigh pro bmx's
- love the graphics and colour scheme
- its as light as i could afford to go,- 531's and above were creeping out of my budget
- it alows me to interact with my old raleigh mates
- allows me to customise and build
the most money will be spent on wheels as they are transferable.
- had to be a raleigh

thanks a lot guys great informative replies, i never searched for coldset sorry man i tried retrack i;ll do that now though.
i cant remember what size the second ring is,
i do remember using a gearing calculator before for a bmx and yeah i believe 52 - 19/20 gives good gearing. just worried a 52tooth will look a bit huge, what about using a 44t sugino chainring for a bmx would it fit?
yeah when i asked what coldsetting meant the boys in kiwi cycles said you dont wanna know it invloves big tools bending the dropouts needless to say i was concerned.
i dont know what the cost of this is i will find out as i know he's doing it as part of crank rebuild.
the guys seem insistant this is the best way to go for a 120mm track wheel, i tought it was abit severe and surely all these single / fixed speed conversions on old frames havent went through this!?
i more than happy as long as i dont notice it in anyway as in paint/angles/strenght/cost but it just seems severe. -
Hi guys, im in the process of rebuilding my 84 raleigh Quasar with reynolds 501
this is areally steep learning curve for me so id appreciate some more info on this...i recently dropped the frame off at Kiwi Cycles to get the crank removed/rebuilt as i dont have the tools for this.
they guys were really decent and i got great service.
basically my crank is being rebuilt, replacing the BB for a new one, beacuase a) mine hasnt been serviced ince 84 b) a new one witll help with the chainline
the original chainrings are 52 tooth on the big one and i cant remember the smaller.
i would ideally want to use one of these original rings as i am on a strict budget, my question is, is 52 tooth too big, (i havent built a wheelset yet so i can vary the rear cog to get a good gearing), would the smaller 2nd ring be better, should i scrap them and fit a 44tooth 80's bmx ring? is this even possible with the original crank/spider?lastly it was suggested my frame was 'retracked' or 'coldset' in order to allow for a wheelset to fit without spacers
my questions are will this harm the integrity of the frame in terms of strength or will it affect the paintwork?
is it a much better option, will it make things much easier when getting wheels than spacers? -
thanks lads yeah i love it does everything i want right now, its raleigh, its a bit unique, it lets me build choosing all the bits i want and keeps me entertained over the winter, and most importantly you get that satisfaction at the end knowing its custom and you built it.
i love the original colour scheme and thats what partly made me choose to really go for this bike from hte raleigh range that and the aerospace tubing which i love. i also think the colour will work well with white tan and bits of gold which is my intended scheme
as you say buy components i can afford as they will be transferable later!
cheers for the positive comments -
Good choice for 20GN. I have a black one, good all weather saddle and fairly light.
Save your elbows. Use a hacksaw. Mark lines on the outside of the dropout that continue along from existing dropout sides with a sharp point (scriber, or craft knife blade will do) cut just inside them with hacksaw. File to finish.
awesome im bound to be full of questions on the way
after i use the search function ill ask you if you dont mind
as soon as its built ill be out for the rides and drinks meets
cheers

Seriously though, d14vd_h...
- Driveside dropout. Get it in a vice, mark out how far you want to extend the slot. Drill hole first. Use a small pilot dril, then keep opening the hole out until it's the right diameter. Cut along existing slots to meet the hole you've drilled. round everything off with a small files and emery tape. Take it easy. Mark it out properly.
- Keep the bars. Chop and flop.
- Get a "Cross-top" or similar lever. A dual pivot brake would be good if you can get one cheap. It doesn't look like you'll need a long drop caliper which is good 'cos most of them look shite. I can vouch for that, I've an old conversion with an Alhonga caliper that works fine but won't win any beauty contests.
- Cranks look serviceable. If the BB is not a sealed unit, take apart and pack with grease.
- Get yourself a decent saddle.
- Ride it until it's wrecked. Don't spend too much money on doing it up. Spend a resonable amount on decent rims, you can transfer them to another bike later.
Enjoy it.
Awesome man thanks...
dont have much access to workspace or tools cos of where i am had to leave it all in glasgow.
my plan was
charge spoon saddle
tidy up the frame as much as possible including sorting the dropout, think i will be file and emory paper only though and elbow grease!
new headset
stock bars flipped and chopped or are is white white grips or tape
goldfinger lever
front caliper if i can source dont know what im looking for though!?
need a seatpost bolt and quill for the stem
rebuild the crank greasing like a mad man
new toe straps in white or brown
wheels built by bricklane bikes in white or silver prob deep v
nice fresh bolts and grease everywhere thats necessary - Driveside dropout.

I just like them, gonna try and get some black B123AA's for myself. No idea if the lever will fit. The clamp certainly won't. Just ride brakeless.
reckon i'll stick with the stock bars
tho if someone can point me in the direction of white track style grips that would be goodeither that or pursuit style bullhorns but im still not sure if i like the look, just think id use the positions more
-
I like it, get track drops.
You gonna file/cut out the drive-side dropout? Might make getting good tension difficult.
yeah gonna need to file that off, toying with the idea of filing off the braze ons while im at it
what makes you say track drops? i was planning on using a goldfinger brake lever will it work ok with track drops tho? my first thought was no?

Hi Guys...
well i got my winter project bike..
was desperate to get my hands dirty again after building all the raleigh burners and was keen for a fixed speed
so here we have it ive combined them all!!!1984 Raleigh Quasar 12
501 Reynolds with aerospace tubingi got this from ebay complete minus the wheels, the pics you see or as it landed plus the catalogue pcis and a few completes i dredged off the net
looking forwardto getting in about it, ive already stripped it as far as possible and im going to pick up the relevnt tools to do the rest tomorrow
the colour is awesome its like a shark grey into a pearly white silver . the aerospace tubing is awesome it also featured on the team pro burners
looking forwarded o gettin it up and running and crisp and clean, first decison is whether to go with pursuit bullhorn bars, stick with the originals or got for full track drops.
colour scheme will be mainly silver chrome components with some anodised gold details, white parts prob bar tape wheels or tyres and toe straps. tan leather saddle prob a charge sppon
appreciate your thoughts

@BDW - Try advertising it either http://www.burnerworld.co.uk/ or http://www.radbmx.co.uk/
should go pretty quick in that condition. Good Luck.what he said
thats a very good price and if i was still going thru these like a darts player does pints then id be having that
good luck -
hhha
thats the thing they are locked in u need a fob to get outexcept for a side exit door which is largely unused they must only have it for health and safety or fire or something it only opens from the inside and theres a significant staircase to get up.
as ed says im grateful ive got that chance to move the bike /up the security
i wont be leaving my knogs on in the meantime -
Parcel force and Mercian had no other details other than the frame was dispatched and delivered. The signature was taken electrically and apparently was not much more than a messy line.
shit man real sorry to hear that and sorry i couldnt be more use.
if anything it at least u got to vent and know ure not a lone case.
i was amazed how easily i could find who'd signed for mine from the name a few clicks and i knew -
also if u sign for something then it relieves the liability of the courier for damage, ...
how often have u fully unwrapped and inspected something with a dhl man standing over u with his plastic pencil lol
never ,
its as quick as they can get away, had a few smashed plastic saddles on my old skool bmx's that i could do nothing about -
exact thing happened to me with parcel force this week, though for something of much less value,
i contacted the seller they said theyre records had it as signed for...and gave me the name and flat number
went upstairs neighbour had i behind his door had been there for a week and he was bemused as to why i hadnt been round sooner, explained to him that they hadnt dropped a card round. thing his he's the number 1 up from me but he's further away than another neighbour, dont understand the logic.
moral is can mercian not tell u who signed and u can check 192.com or directory enquiries to see where they live -
steady on mate! take your time typing, don't rush this isn't a TT internet.
I think you should have a proper word with your landlord, make some sort of rules that the tenant should make sure the shutter go down before they leave/enter the building, dunno how to solve that when the tenant exiting the building mind.
either way usually a meeting with everyone would work methinks (work for me at least).
hhahah sorry bro im just all hyped up with fear clearly
yeah sounds like a plan, the guy who wrote the note seemed quite militant and up for a scrap
he signed off saying...'if you notice anyone suspicious and are too scared to confront them please call the police, or me as i know exactly what to do'

shouldnt be too hard to be honest i will need the missus seal of approval, but having the underground secure carpark was such a huge bonus when we decided on this place as ive went from my family home with big garage with work space etc etc, to here an this was a good compromise though u cant just down tools during a rebuild for a brew and if u have to run up stairs for a forgotton part u move fast
ps it has a qr on the back as its my freeride mtb, the ns core i stuck some photies up once, sorry should have mentioned that,
tho part of the problem is ive just won my fixed speed project bike on ebay (a 80's reynolds framed gem details in another post soon)
so now i would have 2 bikes to home!
prob wont have wheels on the fixed till xmas so that should be secure -
Seen some awesome bikes roll out of there in the last few weeks, i live there,
1 with a front aerospoke in black was particularly striking.
wondered if any of the owners were members on here??
worth a shout
