Think I should point you all (if no one has already) to Stefan Van Fleteren's great series of pictures on racing and the Classics in Flanders. Had a launch of the exhibition here a few years ago which included riding through London at rush hour with Johann Museeuw, Lion of Flanders, quite a sight, followed by much free Vedette beer and a ramshackle Flemish brass band. A great photographer

also here's a lovely one of Bernard Hinault in the infamous 1980 Liege-Bastogne-Liege - the one where he finished 20 mins ahead of the the remaining 30 or so out of a a field of 100 plus and needed hot water poured over his hands to un-freeze them from the bars. Grim:

I bought a great Pitbull mini d-lock off these guys. I dropped by the warehouse in Herne Hill so can't offer an opinion on the mail order but thought the prices were ok and they weren't pretending to be high-end in the same way a B&B on Seven Sisters Road doesn't suggest it's Claridges. Bad service is bad service for sure but be realistic before you damn the business over an inner tube and a piece of moulded plastic.

Waterloo has been 'worked on' for months now - totally crazy. Should have just closed over whole weekend and get it done. It's not rocket science to lay tarmac and the more they hang around half-finished with associated new layouts and bollards etc, the more likely accidents are to occur. A case in point was down on Peckham Rye west side, junction with I think it's called East Dulwich Grove (or road), temporary lights made the junction even more dangerous and snarled up, hardly ever saw them working on it over a period of weeks and possibly months, and then a ten year old schoolgirl was killed crossing there.
And what happened?
Later same day they had a team working there into the evening and got it finished in a matter of hours. I might be a cynic but that really takes the gateaux, and in some part I've no doubt, this terrible mess contributed to the girls death with people jumping short temp lights, obfuscated vision etc.
Disgusting. Honestly. How hard can it be to fix these things.

the Endura Event 3/4 are great - sure you get lower leg wet but that soon dries and elsewhere they are totally waterproof and robust. Also avoid the boil-in-the-bag effect during summer and better than paclite - need no reproofing. Look for an online offer

Quick question but there used to be a bike shop in Upper Clapton called Chain Gang cycles. It was run by a fella called Darren, decent guy, early MTB champ, who also built frames. I know it closed down maybe 6 years ago, but does anyone have details of where he went? I found this list of frame builders:
http://www.framebuilding.com/custom_uk_bicycle_framebuilders.htm
And I happen to know he lived in Essex, so was his surname Barber?
He made great frames but I particularly liked a hardtail mtb that incorporated a bottle opener on the chain stay - a great detail meaning you could open a beer with the bike
Any info
Thanks

Lyndhurst Way, se15, Peckham area.
This road is known amongst a few devotees as the worst road in London. It's entire length is a patchwork of half-hearted repair, speed-bump, crack and crevice. It is so relentlessly bad, so murderously rough, to travel it's length is to experience some sort of psychological and physical breakdown. I've seen people at the junction with Peckham Road wild eyed, tearful, even hysterical.
And I've seen it in myself.
Heart and headset cracked.
It works like sleep deprivation; you can never relax and just cycle for even two metres before some broken tarmac sends a jolt though the frame. Even the road markings, the yellow lines and the no parkings are made from a concrete paint in heavy relief. In fact, if I closed my eyes and rode across these markings I could read them like Braille.
I hate this road so bad. I want to smash it more, to beat it with my fists until they bleed.
I am going to have to move.

Very sorry to read the thread. Sad news indeed. This time of year (the using up of council budgets on innumerable small roadworks) is I think a particularly dangerous time on the roads, with temporary lights, incredible amounts of distracting road furniture and alternative layouts and priorities. Everyone take care.

On the subject of rear lights, I swear by these
http://www.parker-international.co.uk/13040/Smart-317R-1-2-Watt-LED-Rear-Light.html
Basically they call themselves superflash, come with the aaa's and are the best rear light I've ever used and at less than a tenner at the moment are a total bargain. 3 little flashing leds in sequence then a big f/o pulse from the main er, 'superflash'
You definitely won't be disappointed, they're one of those products that you pray they don't replace in the new seasons line etc.

Thanks Dicki for the info - I might even try and post a pic here - as the opriginal paint job was a bit sketchy and I'm no purist I had it done by Vaz in a kind of lovely gunmetal - he does a good job. I've thought of getting other frames over the years but just can't quite part with a bike that has served me so well both here and in Canada. Plus I've a soft spot for that lowland thing above Italian fancies

The Brooks pricing is crazy - like someone mentioned above, not so long ago a Swft Ti sold for around the 70-80 mark - I've got two of them - but 200 now is over 100% price increase and whilst I love them, in the end it's a piece of leather fairly simply shaped over a metal frame. I love the fact they are British and that they are made traditionally but 200? Better to spend that on a pair of Trickers - English made, shaped leather and you get two.

New to the forum but great to see all this discussion of Gazelles
I've had a Champion Mondiale for about 10 years - paid 25 quid for the frame/forks (531c) , resprayed and it's been a fantastic, tight, ss ever since. Out of interest mine has chrome forks and internally routed rear brake cabling - anyone know what kind of era? and I am also somehwat mystified by what constitutes an A or an AA frame - am presuming the AA is better?
Anyway, I think they're bloody great.
