It's a really sad story. I can't bear it. Why is life like this, fate so fickle? There's us, serious, streamlined and sweet with our carbon forks and we ride into someone who doesn't even have the decency to buy an overvalued vintage Colnago with Delta brakes that might have helped. It's painful, stupid and
I can't go on, I'll go on

They're designed for speed and more of an aesthetic idea rather than practical for London. Stiffer is a minority concern unless you're racing to the finish. People debate stiff cranksets and bb's, but it's for pro's rather than the casual rider. As Sr suggested. Do it but don't complain if the love wanes.

If you don't want flouro then anything will do. Lightweight, Paclite or Event if you want to pay money and protect against the occasional shower.
Otherwise hmmmmm............charity shop/no name plastic.
But hell, live a little, you deserve it....
Why not linen for the Our Man in Havana look?
Just watch the wrinkles and the gin slings.

Canals?
Nice in principle in a Pevsner kind of way.
But better as an excursion rather than regular commute. Bike set-up irrelevant. Willingness to deal with pedestrians and moody hoods an asset.
Leave it to the boaters, walkers and joggers. Let's be fair, it is a more pedestrian kind of pursuit. Plus it pisses me off when cyclists come flying along, ringing the goddam bell and there's a quicker road above. No real need for it, it's pleasant because of the lack of bikes or cars

E&C is not a good place for cyclists. Especially cocky ones. I work beside it and have witnessed a number of accidents and at least one fatality. It's basically dangerous, not fun, (in the way that Vauxhall cross is not fun and nor is Hyde Park Corner) so let's cut the bravado. Bear in mind that while you may be a competant cyclist (and painfully cool), what looks to me like 50%+ of the motorists using it seem not to know where they are going, what exit they need or what lane to be in. Agreed that if you have to use it, use it at speed but FFS it ain't the cul-de-sac you grew up in and there are actually bike lanes that circumvent it. Although of course I do understand that the extra minutes mean dead-time in our incredibly important schedules.
