not sure about stena but i did newhaven - dieppe this summer and the bike storage was at the end of the boat, far enough aay from cars (although at the end of the journey i returned ot find 3 big tourers on top of my bike :S)

saw a chain tool in a national bike shop/car parts chain store for £3.50 yesterday, not the best, but it will fix your chain while you wait for your tool bling.

my pub bike is a old cheap ral too. those cable tabs fall straight off if you give them a bit of encouragement....
