Personally I dislike the way it ruins the line of the shoe - like outriggers on a canoe. They also look messy and, from a practical standpoint, get caught on abso-fucking-lutely everything. Like a hangnail. To each is own and all that.
You can get plenty of loafers without the beef roll. It's a minor quibble. I find the insertion of a penny kind of crass though. What is it supposed to signify?

Goodyear welted sole requires special tools. Lasts cost a fortune, even old one's are expensive.
Some of my family were trained shoe makers in Northampton. I am not sure it would be easy to get an apprenticeship there any more because there's only a few companies left.
I pass Church's and Trickers every morning by the way. If you've seen the film Kinky Boots. That's the Trickers factory, from the outside at least. If anyone ever wanted to do the Northampton shoe factory shop run then I 'might' find the time to show them about.
