I may have missed, but @ectoplasmosis what are you doing for your flooring?
-
I've read that in some insects (fleas/mosquitos for example) blood type, lactic acid amounts and other genetic stuff plays a big part (I get shredded by fleas/midges etc - my wife is always unscathed). But in something less mobile that's just sitting on a blade of grass waiting to hook onto whatever walks past I can't see that'd be a factor.
-
Have taken 5 good sized ticks off my wife in the past month. None on me. Going to the same places. Similar clothing. I even roll around on the floor (filming) and they're just never on me. Took two (mm size ones) off my son this morning as well after we somehow missed them on the check and shower yesterday. One hadn't bitten so just crawled onto the tweezers. They're such resilient little shits.
Anyone tried Picaridin? Growing up it was always deet/ permethrin but always hated applying it.
We also walked timed yesterday with a horsefly hatching or something as there were more buzzing us than I've ever experienced.

Yep, having now got a few test sheets of valchromat that's my current plan. I'd imagined 8mm would be quite flimsy but actually it's rock solid and I think what I'm going to do after recessing magnets into the surface is actually drill the matching steel in from underneath the wooden table and then hide/bury them with whatever plug I drill out. Only thing is making sure the magnets etc are absolutely centred so it fits flush rather than wonky.
Then route the Powerplay mat into the valchromat itself so I won't even need to touch the surface of the main table (apart from sand it and finish it). Then I'll just have a table surface that I could in theory cut to size and use on other tables in the future.

Sat down too hard the other day and felt a jolt go up my back and various crackly noises and pain in my neck/base of skull. Was sore immediately but next day I woke up unable to turn my head and, perhaps more annoyingly, unable to hear clearly. It's like I'm a vacuumed air craft hangar. I can hear everything (even highs and lows I wouldn't usually be able to hear) but it's all muffled and echoey. My balance is also fucked and I'm wobbling around like I've had 6 cans for breakfast. Amputate?

OK, update - valchromat is great - passes a charge through, connects to wifi etc. But what could I finish it with that would be completely sealed/wipeable so I could ALSO use it as a kind of chalkboard/doodle surface to jot down to-do/sketch out lighting diagrams etc. Or is THAT the point where the idea becomes too much?

Test 1: pour coffee onto untreated valchromat. Not recommended.
edit: actually it's already dried (after wiping immediately) and it's unnoticeable. Felt like I was brushing off loads of fibers when I was drying (so I probably was) but it's looking and feeling good now. Going to try a few more liquid tests (leaving flask with coffee on bottom for half an hour etc).

I guess I could recess a very thin something into the top, but not the entire thing - A because of the size and B because I'm routing in a Logitech PowerPlay (upside down) into the desk so it's perfectly flush with the desk with the aim of charging and receiving 2.4ghz signal through the valchromat.
I've just received a big pile of pieces (350x550mm) and actually even at 8mm it's rock solid so think I could def do a 2-4mm recess in it.
The surface is lovely fwiw - def nice for a mouse pad. Going to do a few tests of spilling/wiping stuff on it and then test a few other sheets with different finishes (matte varnish / hard wax etc)
-
Depends what you're doing with them.
I've used these in baghali polo: https://miladbazar.com/products/istanbul-split-broad-beans-900g?
I get that part of the appeal is the actual act of sitting around shelling the fuckers (my friend growing up was the son of some Iranian diplomat so at least once a month we'd be drafted) , but these gave decent results.I also do a warmed through salad of broad beans, mint, lemon (zest and juice), maybe a bit of feta. Would def only use fresh for that.

Magnets
I want to stick magnets to a sheet of 8mm thick material so I can have it as a permanent but removable desk surface. I don't want to screw the magnets into the surface because I imagine, being 8mm thick, it would rip or damage when I pulled them off. I don't want to see any screws on the clean side of the surface.
I could probably keep it simple and just use some self adhesive magnetic tape but I worry it'd fail over time and getting it back in the same spot would be a pain.
So am imagining some kind of enclosure (surface is valchromat so potentially an enclosure of the same - whatever will bond to it with no chance of it falling off ever with the right glue), then screwing the magnet into the enclosure.
So the magnet is screwed in and the enclosure is bonded to the main surface. Then the main desk has matching magnets routed into it so when the surface sits on the desk it's all flush and seamless.
Anyone got any thoughts on what material of magnet/brands/what amount of pull I'd want (I'd say I'd want at least 4 magnets, possibly 6 - one on each corner and one in the middle (surface is 1000m x 2000m x 8mm).
Given the 8mm thick material, I'm not expecting great big thumb size things sticking into equivalent holes in the desk so all got to be fairly tiny.

Have some stuff not touched in over a year which is a sign it should go. Pick up in Devon or can post at cost. Can potentially arrange to meet when I'm up for a shoot or something.
RS2 Pro Combo - £300 (very good cond)
Tilta Float (with various extra bits) - £500 (very fun - comes with a belt and a few other accessories).
ThinkTank Production Manager 50 - £250 (bomb proof - can fit at least 2 crew members inside)
Aputure 120D mk2 - £300 (good condition, still a great single source for its size)
Aputure Spotlight Mount (26 degree) - £250 (no iris but otherwise here and good. Heavy. Would only recommend if you know why you want it).
Aputure Nova P300C - £1000 (stupidly big case, doesn't give off a ton of light but it does have a lovely quality)
Aputure 2x fresnel - £75 (handy for 300/120ds, maybe 60d as well)
Canon EF 100mm macro 2.8 - £400 (very good condition)
Canon EF 40mm 2.8 pancake - £90 (good condition)
Laowa 12mm zero d T2.9 EF - £900 (excellent condition but have bought the PL one instead)
Tilta Nucleus M kit (2 fiz sticks plus motors, hand unit etc) - £750 (hate these, but ultimately they're pretty good value for what they can do. Used to use them on Shape bars for shoulder work and was great controlling everything with thumbs)
Westcott scrim Jim cine 4*4 w a couple of rags - £150 -
Oh thooooose cunts, yeah I know them. I think that'd probably be a tidier finish than what I'll end up with but really want it to be a removable lid-type affair and if I'm adding a laminate to something already hard I figure might as well just be that goldilocks material in the first place or I risk it being too thick for the wireless charging and transmission.

This is completely the answer I wanted, thank you. Have already ordered a 300x450mm test so will try a couple of finishes and think that could be the winner.
Edit. 1 q - how long have you had it? Do you notice much sheen from rubbing it with your wrist etc or does the wax (what kind?) give some protection? If it works I'm not completely against replacing every now and then but would like a good year or 3 out of it.

Is this similar to what @hoefla was saying?
Something like this: https://www.hm-wood-shop.co.uk/shop/standard-laminate-2604c1.html?
MR MDF (moisture resistant?) sounds like valchromat which is one of the materials I'm currently looking at but just worry it's not super durable and I'd be rubbing off fibers with the mouse that would affect the optical sensor. Or that the material would be a bit too stubbly and again, optical sensor would be impacted. I guess the answer is to ask them for a sample and have a go.

Maaaybe? Not really sure what finishes are possible with lino-esque products. Although I'd like it wipeable I want a bit of texture/friction for the mouse. I know some people use glass/alu for mouse surfaces (with little glass feet on the underside of the mouse in place of the pads to slide around better/last longer) but I actually move the mouse all of about 5cm in any direction so need a bit of friction to keep it in place. Currently use a 100cm x 50cm cordura pad but I'm pretty done with it.
This is my desk equivalent of switching to an induction hob.

If you figure it out, do post an update - I want a surface between 4 and 8mm thick to attach to my desk with magnets so I can bury some stuff inside it. But the kicker is I want it to be wipeable for coffee spills and also double as a mouse surface.
So far I'm looking at valchromat and xylocleaf but the latter is tricky to get thin enough and the former I worry has a texture too much like sugar paper and won't wipe well or be useful as a mouse pad alternative.
