MTB and road stack/reach don't really compare. You could be looking at having your bars 30-50mm higher and 20-40mm closer on a trail bike than a road position. You don't want to be going over the bars when the trails point down. The current trend for MTBs is to have a long top tube, slack head angle and short stem. My colleague went for the 15inch, absolutely loves it and her husband then bought the same bike in the next size!

For riding in the UK, unless you only ever go out in bone dry weather, then they probably will last twice as long. Sintered aren't as quiet but will work consistently.
In saying that, I did the KLMTB race at Thetford and destroyed a pair of pads in the rear in 1 lap due to the sand/mud mix and a slightly bent rotor. They had only done 3 dry rides before that. I'm trying out the überbike sintered pads - £7 a pair or £23 for 4 pairs with free postage.

Raced two seasons with Challenge Fango front and reverse Grifo rear as standard. Use Baby Limus front and Limus rear for hideous mud. Really impressed with the Baby Limus as it's centre knobs aren't too draggy and the edges grip really well. I'd use them all year round if I could only run one set. Ran them as low as 24psi with no issues (73kg).

If you fancy something different to a Passat or Octavia, have you thought about a SEAT Exeo ST? Basically a B7 Audi A4, with the cabriolet dash and B8 engines. 140 or 170 diesel or the 2.0T from a golf gti.

The Ribble bikes are fairly cheap on their site. If you can get a new one with 10spd for £580 (with rack mount eyelets), second hand prices should be decent.

Bit of a dredge, but how are you finding the Superb? How does the petrol compare to your previous disesl? Looking at a Superb estate 220 and coming from a VAG 140bhp tdi.
