I used the bikes in Brussels. Heavy, slow, some were damaged with poor brakes etc (although braking got a lot better once I realised the brakes are the opposite way round!).
Still, after a day I actually found them quite useful - I was there for a conference and they were a convenient way to get between the hotel, conference and beer.
I think roads in London are a bit more squished though and if it means a glut of inexperienced cyclists everywhere I'm sure we will see a rise in injuries or even fatalities - a rather brutal way to make the point for cycling improvements.
One thing I was considering is to get a group from the office to go out for lunch in places that can't be walked to in a lunch hour. -

I don't know how long they've been there, but I snapped these cameraphone pictures of the new stands:

At a first aid course I went to, they said one of the reasons they have a few of these is to deal with people who don't fit in a regular ambulance.
I doubt that's the only reason, but if you need to call an ambulance for a heifer then it is worth telling them otherwise there might be a delay as a regular one arrives only to have to then call for a big 'un -
Hate to do this too, but I can't make it - a shame, since I'm no longer geared! Managed to dent the rim on my alfine rear wheel so whilst it was in for a rebuild I put a single speed on (44-16 w/700c). My knees are still getting used to the consequences, but it got me from Stokie to Wimbledon and back twice last week and the 4 mile commute on the A10's been a cinch.

Great ride & good turnout, although due to getting rather lost around Canary Wharf I got caught out by the rain at the end.
Typical that I got a puncture, but at least it was right outside my front door!
GPS trace showing just how lost I got here:

Compare with the official route:

Had a rather officious copper tell us we'd be arrested if we went along Tower Hill, so we just went under Fenchurch St and tried to rejoin it further along. A race official said there were wheelchair folk on the course and to be careful so we just went along parallel roads all the way up to the Strand. Rejoined at the Mall, and got to the 200m marker before the cadets told us we couldn't go any further.

I was holding off just in case Saturday turned out to be a late night, but it looks like it's bedtime already! I've persuaded my flatmate that getting up earlier than he usually goes to bed is a good idea, so he'll be along too.
See you guys at the start - weather looks like it should be OK, with just a chance of light rain. Probably decent conditions for the runners.
I'll bring the camera along as well.

An old thread, I know, but I just replaced the Maxxis Detonators on my commuter bike - they were OK I thought with maybe 1-2 punctures a month. They're starting to crack up in places, and the sidewalls are looking a bit battered.
Swapped them for Conti Topcontact 700x28's which were quite pricey but seemed like they had a nice compound, came with 2 free tubes and a 1 year get-a-puncture-get-a-free-tube guarantee which I thought seemed OK.
Slow as hell though (55mins to work instead of 45!) and hard work. The ride is different too, and I'm not sure it's better. Probably something to do with balancing on a ridge of rubber in the middle, rather than the nice even surface of a slick.
So, good for fitness training perhaps, but you could do the same thing just by having your rear brake half on...
Might see where I can get ahold of a replacement set of Detonators from... -
Thanks MA3k, apologies to all for forgetting everyone's name and sweet jesus did it rain on the way to the housewarming party. I was just about dry when it was time to leave. Oh, and the A13 flyovers near Canning Town aren't much fun on a bike when your legs have said no.
Lovely route, great weather and awesome company - for my first ride in a group I don't think it could've been better! (well, apart from the gears ;)
Thanks guys & gals. I think it's time for bed.

Why the hell not?
Always wanted to ride to the east coast and the weather looks like it might just be OK, so count me in.
I'm afraid I'll be toting gears, but only 8..
Oh, er, hi btw - new here although I've lurked a bit.

Got one in TK Maxx for £2. No idea what pressure it'll do, but I managed to get up to around 80psi without any problem. It's really tacky and plasticy with one of those lever things for the valve. Came with converters for use with footballs too.
I did manage to pop an inner tube with it (I guess it was pinched) at about 2am one night. Made our parakeet freak out - those things are loud when they go.
Snapped a couple more outside the office at lunchtime.
