Do you have a little cafe lock that would be easier to lug? Just something to slow someone down for the time you would need in a shop?
I don't, but this might be a good time to invest in one. Good idea! (My first thought was 'what about cable ties?', but I suspect that wouldn't be sensible.)

not so simple. I'm into girls with armpit hair, even more so if they are lesbians. Even more so if they are trying to put me off. I like the whole thing of knowing you'll never ever get anywhere with a girl and facing up to the fact that she is finding you annoying knowing that you fancy her despite all your best efforts. I'm basically into the whole rejection thing I guess. Pretty good at it too, been loathed unhindered three years come September.
So Emilia - what's the money on - is this girl gay or straight in your opinion? And what do you think of her? Is it the done thing to go on about her "guns" (superbly enjoyable The Stylist) etc.?

don't need a lock. if you are stopping somewhere there will be other cyclists and apart from the first bit of the journey there is nowhere to buy anything anyway once the pubs shut until you get to the feed station.
riding back? you will need more than red bull :-)
I really meant for the riding back bit. There won't be quite so many other cyclists around, and I'll be horrendously sleep-deprived, so likely to do something silly, like wandering off and forgetting I even own a bicycle, much less where I left it.
When I put it like that it seems obvious that I should play it safe - but I still kind of want some gnarled old veteran to come forward and tell me that they've ridden three Dun Runs back to back, in the rain, with no sleep and no locks, and that I'll be fine. It is a very heavy lock...

I'm doing it - but I have a question: to lock or not to lock? I know I won't need one for the first leg, but I'm thinking of riding back, and can't work out whether it's safer to don the Abus (you never know...), or whether it's pointless lugging half a ton of chain around for the sake of 5 minutes' peace of mind when I need to stock up on Red Bull.
It's a question I've asked myself before, and never satisfactorily answered. Anyone got any sensible advice? Or horror stories?

I may have missed the boat a bit, but I'm a girl-who-rides-fixed and couldn't resist standing up and being counted.
Re. the technical boy-stuff - well, first of all it's not just boy-stuff - one of the best mechanics I know is a woman. But I have to admit that I'm crap at it (this probably has more to do with being a Pisces than with being a woman). I'm living proof that you can get by with the help of more technically minded friends, and by embarrassing yourself in bike shops. And if you're anything like me, you'll get very good at riding up hills, in order to balance out your pride!
Re. massive tyrannosaurus thighs - hmmmmm. I think it depends on how you're built to start with. I'm stocky, and put on muscle easily, so my legs are HUGE - but I've seen loads of female couriers (who probably do far more miles than me) who look all lean and toned and lanky. It might also have something to do with what gear you ride - I'm on 48x18. Any thoughts, anyone?
Re. getting away from lights at speed - I find I'm a bit slower than most (especially Bromptons) for the first couple of seconds, but usually overtake them before we've cleared the junction. I also find accelerating and cruising a lot more ...relaxing on fixed.
Re. Pentonville Road, etc. - much easier on fixed (but see 'massive tyrannosaurus thighs', above). I've got practically no experience of single speed, but I imagine that you'd lose all the benefits of gears, without gaining any of the benefits of fixed. But then again, so many people seem to ride them that perhaps I'm missing something...
Re. fashion thing - well yes. That's the only drawback as far as I'm concerned.
I'm going to take as much food as I can possibly fit in my bag (and cable-tie to my frame). This is my third DD, and I've had major food issues (i.e. not enough) on both others. The first year I ate four energy bars, two gels, a Snickers bar, one flapjack and two doorstep sandwiches, along with various sugary sweets and coffee beans, bits and pieces shared by other riders and three healthy meals the day before. I still bonked at 6am, and I couldn't have made it on less.
Last year I ate... actually, I just looked at the list, and it's so long that I'm embarrassed to reproduce it!
But there are people who seem to make it on two bananas and half a flapjack. I guess it just depends on your own personal metabolism and riding style. I would second all comments about not relying on the foodstop though. Oh, and carry plenty of cash - after the garage in Epping Forest, there are no shops open till Dunwich Beach, and probably not that many cashpoints either.
