ive just been playing on a mates excercise bike, and ive now realised that i want rollers so i can ride my bike while i watch telly. i had a look online and theyre alot more expensive than i had at first imagined. money i would rather spend on bikes. i love a bit of DIY so i thought i might give making some a go.
however i have a few questions some other minds could input useful ideas/experience
a turbo trainer esque device would be easier to build, and small to store, but are they as nice to use as free floating rollers?
are guards neccessary? i might have side guards so my wheel doesnt go off the sides, but i have also seen front/back guards. do i really need these?
what do you reckon would be the best way to add friction to the rollers. ive seen ones with fans, i dont like this becuase of the irritating noise. magnets are too complicated for my DIY. i was thinking of having an adjustable weight roated by gears from the roller. bit primitive but it would work i guess. maybe have the weight full of water (easier to adjust/transport) instead of a solid weight?
how important is the surface of the roller for grip? what materials would be best?
thanks for anything you guys can come up with

glad you got it back, but paying for the privlage, pfft.
i would have just pretended it wasnt mine, got on for a "test ride", called him a stealing cunt and rode off. possibly riding back past for a bit of slap.
still at least you have your bike, its always easier to re-invent the past once its happened.

i got offered a job lot of 15 sets of mondo slicks from my LBS for a god price. 700x23 i believe. he said that hes not selling any and thyeve been sitting around for ages. its not a very road bike establishment.
ive always rode continental gatorskins and never had any problems, alough i do wonder if they are abit sluggish. but ive never really bothered to try anything else.
are these any good, is it worth it?

i narrowly missed some fatass pikey woman who stepped out on me, she shouted all sort of profanity at me as i cruised down the road. it enraged me but i couldnt be arsed to do anything and eventially forgot about it.
later that evening i was riding back the same way (falmouth is a small town) and saw her again. i was coming from behind, and as hard as could i slapped her arse.
it was a bit lame but i gave myself a mental high five later.

heres the plan: flip BB axle to bring chainring closer, remove casette, put spacers on to get the chainline correct, rotafix cog with locktite, add lockring, and pray it works.
i cant redish becuase the spokes/nipples are pretty rusty in places.
im kind of convinced that it will hold up to skidding as long as its on tight enough.
what im concerned about is that the wheel is quick release, and that the chainline is going to be well out. i cant really check/estimate the line becuase the bike is at my mates house and we havnt tried flipping the axle yet. -

my LBS shop thought i was a courier cause i always have a fat rucksack full of clothes when i stop there to fill up my tires. that and i always ask for obscure shit they dont have. if it isnt speacialised or mountain bike related they dont have it. i dont get it, there isnt any decent countryside for miles yet they mainly stock MTB's. ive now given up asking.
i always get the feeling they laugh when i leave. "theres that wierd guy after track bike stuff we dont have, hah who rides track bikes!! ROLF". but then again they are the kind of guys to ride full sus marins and listen to metallica. do all marin riders listen to metal?
the arrogance in bikes shops is akin to that of guitar shops, except you cant blatently show off in a bike shop.
i digress

i hate everyone mentioned. i find it hard to watch television and not get angry cause of the dicks on it. i like james may and bruce parry but thats about it. oh, and attenbourgh.
all the channel 4 people really enrage me, surely theres only 3 criterea: funny, interesting, attractive. none of them are funny, have anything interesting to say, and most of them are (admitingly subjective) pretty bland looking. i dont get how people find alexa chung atractive, she has the body of a prepubescent boy and a voice like gargleing marmite (aka satans phlegm)

i can really loose it on the phone, alougth i am refined enough to do it once ive hung up. ive smashed so many phones its not true. at the time it seems like a perfectly good idea: that phone call made me angry- smash the phone.
once the fire alrms in my house would not stop going off, so i ended up ripping them all out of ceiling. only to realise theres a mains powered one on the outside of my house. i found myself leaning out of a 4th floor window smashing it with an axe. after about half an hour i came came to the realisation of what a dick i had been and felt well ashamed. explaining it to the landlord was interesting.

so my mates just got this ratty old road bike he want to convert to fixed on the cheap.
its got a 7 gear cassette on the back and 2 chain rings up the front. he wants to use the bigger of the two rings at the front, which lines up with the 4th biggest gear on the cassette. theres about 2.5mm between the hub and this gear.
im guessing theres good reason why more people dont do this and it all seems a bit shonkey to me. even if he still uses a front brake. ive told him hed be better off with just building a new hub but hes adamant to not spend money on it.
how can a suicide hub be made safe and reliable, if at all?
theres going to be about 2.5mm between the hub and the correct chainline, this seems like a big gap for spacers to fill, is this going to be a problem? redishing isnt really possible due to the state of the spokes/nipples.
we have all the tools neccessary to mod stuff if neccessary.

theyre just some random bars from an old road bike, nothing youd recognise.
the bit i dont get is how to guide the cable out of the exit hole, its not like i can get inside the tube to feed it through. is there some kind of trick?
i was planning on making the holes oval to allow a smoother route, but i am concerned they may weaken the bars. the bars are steel, narrow, and very stiff so i reckon it would be alright.

my beater is raw steel with absolutly nothing on it to protect it from the elements. i was planning on painting it, but ive just not got around to it for several months. it has developed some surface rust but i am surprised as to how little rust has developed. it has only appeared where the wheels fling water from the road.
i would polish it and keep it raw but the brazes arnt exactly buetiful so im probably going to paint it.
i think im more interested in rollers than turbo trainers. i reckon ill be alright without guards or grip.
PVC pipe you say? i was thinking of using say 4" pvc pipe filled with bracing if added strength is needed. im not sure how i will incorperate bearings into them though.
it seems alot of the rollers around dont have any added friction, but rely on the diameter of the roller itself. im concerned that with a FG/SS bike this could be a bit of problem, and its easier to adjust the roller than the bike.
im going to pop down my BnQ this afternoon to scout for materials and ideas.
