back in london for visitation the other day after two years in auckland. mooching round east london and golly there seem to be so many people commuting by bikes and everyone riding like people possessed. so well done you lot, you put auckland to shame. must be fun riding home with heaps of people to say hi to/ race/ abuse. is this biking popularity a new thing?

In tokyo visiting my GF, and max the miracle worker from tokyo fixed gear sorted me a vivalo he bought complete off a keirin rider a couple of days before. i whipped on a pair of risers and a seat cover (to mask the keirin rider's pungent arse sweat) and went for a burn through tokyo with max, which was a bit of a baptism of fire. fck this bike feels sooo good and i was really tempted to keep the tubs and araya gold (?) rims on. its like riding with fudge wheels... really soft and responsive like er... fudge. But something tells me they're REALLY not meant for the street so as a compromise I'll probably keep the front one as is and rebuild the rear with something a bit more sensible.
So to cut a long question (not very) short, does anyone have any suggestions as to what would be a good clincher rim for the rear. strong, light and maybe a bit colourful? velocity's are pretty heavy I've heard. are there any other options?
hello all by the way, havn't posted for ages. (i ll post a few pointers to anyone going to tokyo and wants to find a bike in a couple of days once i ve shat out all the sushi)
there's a picci of me (looking miserable) & the viv on the tokyo fixed gear blog: http://tokyofixedgear.com/blog/
so i get back to london to visit my mum/friends from NZ. I have a Specialized rockhopper still in the garage which i want to sell but my mum insists on keeping for bike rides with her partner. she's about to go out in the morning so i ask her where she s going and she says 'oh i'm taking your bike in again, the tire's gone flat'. turns out she took my bike to the bike shop beacuse it had a flat tire and charged her £17! so this particular morning two days after getting it back it went flat again so she was about to take it back in! aahhhhh!
so two things you re probably thinking... why the fuck can't she put a new tube in herself?! especially for someone who rides to work everyday it's pretty ridiculous. ricockulous. well i plan to teach her in a firm manner.
the other thing: 17 quid! what a bunch of cunts they are in Even's cycles in Kingston upon thames. you'd think for such an extortionate sum of money they might have even bothered to check the rim and tire for glass.
anyway i went in today and demanded a free tube and let my displeasure be known.
sorry, just had to vent spleen...
