Random musings - is Audiophilia for those who live in big spaces and/or can turn the volume up? At 9 o'clock on the volume knob on my 30wpc amp is giving 70db in my listening position... which makes me wonder if actually all I need is a pair of Apple HomePod Mini's and some headphones.
It seems like most trad hi-fi is geared towards the older listener who lives in a bigger space; whilst the newer stuff perhaps reflects modern living conditions better?

Undoubtedly. They have some real weight to the bottom end when cranked. They are good at low listening volumes, but really do wake up when they're a bit louder. I tend to do most of my listening at 55-60dbs from my listening position because I'm in an apartment. If I crank turn go up to about 65, they sound really alive.
There are lots of reviews out there that I feel sum them up really well. Once you've bought quality stands, its much of muchness cost wise anyway. I'd buy the tower's over the bookshelves, but I'm obviously biased.
Oh - they really don't like poor recordings. Like at all.
I was going to ask people's listening volumes. I'm in a terrace, with a shared wall with a neighbour. 70db sounds really nice to me, however, I'm conscious my neighbour might not appreciate that. Am I worrying unnecessarily, alternatively, is there any reasonably priced treatments I can put on the wall to mitigate that? I tend to use headphones post 10pm.

After my local record shop mentioned it to me every time I went in, finally picked up The Necks - Travel, and like it a lot. Dat bassline on the first track is fantastic. He also pushed a couple of used CDs on me, Nik Bartsch's Ronin - Holon and Stoa, which kinda remind me of minimal techno done in an acoustic jazz stylee.

The Rega io doesn't have any tone controls at all. Unless I had a lot of money and could tailor a system to my room/listening preferences, I'd always opt for tone controls.
Edit - Personally though, I'd pay to get your Technics receiver re-caped. I'd don't think I'd ever get rid of my AKAI. It was my Dad's from new in the 70s, sounds great, and has bunch of stuff that just isn't available on some modern amps - mono and loudness buttons, tone controls, 2x phono inputs, 2x speaker outs. Plus silver and 'wood' wins.

'Audiophile' re-issue cash grabs can do one. My local is selling it for a tenner less, but it's still a hard pass from me. I picked up the OJC CD for about £3 a year ago.
