A girl I vaguely know here in the US has been using one (along with a front brake) on a SS bike - she found it ok on the hills of SF, but advises that it's best to repack the internals with 'disc brake grease' for increased longevity. She rates the Velosteel coaster brake a lot more highly than the Shimano one.
I would reiterate the need to repack the coaster brake hubs.
I just repacked a new Sturmey Archer hub I got off of eBay. I took it apart and the grease inside looked like it has seen 15 years of use. A good re-greasing will serve you well.
I am interested in getting one of the Velosteels one day if they are available in the UK.
