er... how do you know they are mafia? loud music sounds like a pretty common cause for an argument.
Going from what the neighbors responsible for loud music said... They could actually just be taking the piss, knowing we're foreigners and all! Then again there was a lot of fighting and all the market stalls hastily closed up at about midday. The bustle in the street disappeared very quickly when the fighting started.

OK, I'm slightly worried.
We're on holiday in Palermo, Sicily. Our apartment happens to be in a pretty run down area of Palermo.
The mafia just had a fight with our neighbor for throwing a loud party late into the night, pissing us and everyone else in the area off, attracting complaints and eventually the police, which the mafia didn't like. So they're pissed off with the neighbors.
As we're on the terrace right next door to them, I'm little bit anxious about being mistaken for them.
Anyone have any words of reassurance?

I decided I don't want to go with the eggbeater pedals in the end and want some platforms which I can attach straps to.
New, unused. Never fitted. They come with clip on pedal surfaces to turn them into platforms. Cleats sealed in bag and instructions included.
Anyone have any other pedals to offer?
Otherwise I can sell the candys for £25

Care to share where did you get those cheap chinese lights? The bay?
Yup, eBay.
They had four states- bright, dim, off, or flashing.
Go over a slight imperfection in the road surface and you'd change from whichever state you were in to another, chosen at random.
Ah, well the ones I got are solid, simple on/off solid push switch operation! I recommend those.

I'm going to build fixed gear rear using a FRONT Shimano Deore M756 disc hub with a bolt-on cog from VeloSolo.
I've bought the hubs and some rigida DP 18 rims. Now I'm browsing for spokes.
I want the rear wheel to be non-dished and I've worked out chainline etc.
Now the question is, in this Shimano spec sheet, centre to flange distance is documented. Does that sound right. Can I just pop that information, along with the 100mm OLN, 61mm flange diameter and 581mm ERD into a spoke calculator and trust the result I get? I got 277. Anyone with a similar setup who can back that up as accurate?
Thanks very much,
MA few other questions:
- Is OLN irrelevant if the wheel isn't dished?
- I actually got 277.8, shall I round down to 277 or up to 278?
- Is OLN irrelevant if the wheel isn't dished?

I actually bought 15 of the 450lm ones (take 3x AAA) elsewhere to get a bulk discount (two for myself, the rest to sell on). They're very nice actually. I like the all aluminium body, feels very solid, and they're extremely bright.
And I just ordered a handful of red lights that look/work similar to the Knog ones but have two LEDs in each. Really handy to keep a few in my bag for the disaster days.

My everyday lights have worked very well and bright for the last year through rain and snow. They cost me nothing (repaired after finding them at a mates house) and have custom gaffer tape waterproofing.
However, for my current build (almost done) Im going to use a £10 450 lumen cree front and three chinese £2 red lights (look similar to knog) on the back.
£16 quid for a nice safe light setup, bargain!

+1 for shit knog light, they batteries on mine died within a couple of months, it was in the autumn so I wasn't even using them every day.
Arent they just overpriced cheap chinese manufactured lights anyway? Surely an LED, switch and battery has very little that can go wrong. The cheap chinese lights have never let me down, especially when you can afford to buy backups to keep in your pockets.

Looking back isn’t just to know what is there; it’s to also humanise yourself.
Bang on I think! I always make sure I look back at drivers and make eye contact at busy junctions while waiting for the lights to change, especially if I'm about to take a right turn. Some drivers get really self concious, like "why is he looking at me?" and I think it does help, you ensure other drivers are aware of you and they do tend to take a bit of care.
A cabbie passed me a bit too close for comfort a few weeks ago. I accelerated up to the lights where he was stopped and got him to roll down his window. I told him what he'd done and he went "I'm sorry". I thought he was being sarcastic and making out he didn't hear me so repeated myself three times to just hear "and I'm sorry" each time. He was genuinely apologising, and I was getting angrier and angrier thinking he was pretending not to hear! I think our presumptions can influence how we treat these situations sometimes!

I've played with one of these. Very nice sound.

singspeed, what about riding on road with bicycle lane on them? do you get any problem (driver going 'go on the lane' and all that).
I've had the odd person tell me to move over and I'm pretty non confrontational so I just listen and move over if it's safe, then when the driver is gone I get back in primary position.
I liked the advice that if someone is shouting/getting angry it's a good sign because they know you're there and they're probably not killers who would intentionally run you over. Still, I swear by the primary position, and wave to drivers if they get too close. The other trick I use is to act like I'm a little bit unstable and purposefully wobble a bit. Drivers will stay well clear and on high alert.
Oh yeah, I'm also pretty careful (like a young grampa cyclist) and don't race down roads unless they're totally clear. Better to leave 15 minutes earlier and be a bit more cautious than to miss something and die/get seriously injured.

double fixed as in, twin drivetrain? that would be badass!
No, I meant as in flip flop between two different cogs! But twin drivetrain would be brilliant, less wear etc. I wonder why no one has done that yet, you just need a double fixed hub, two identical cogs, chainrings, drive side cranks. Would be amazing! You could actually put two opposing freewheels on either side, when you want freewheel you just take one chain off...
