There are a few people on here who live in Kyoto i think. I used to live in Kobe for many years, but never cycled to Tokyo. Can't offer any advice on routes, but just for Japan generally (and i did some touring in summer in other parts)

It is fine to camp anywhere, so bringing tent/bivy can be useful. Summer will be hhuummiiiddd, so be prepared to drink crazy amounts of water. If you aren't looking to camp, then staying in Popeye internet cafes is your best bet.. 1000yen or so for a reclining chair, your own booth, free shower and ice cream. The cheapest way to stay in Japan for sure, and certainly adds to the experience. Otherwise you may be able to find some 'rider houses', which are hostels mainly designed for motorbikers, but usually open to cyclists, and are also around 1000yen for a bed for the night.

I am off to Sierra Leone, leading a group of volunteers on a Y Care International programme, and there is a fundraising element involved. We will be working in four of the slums in Freetown, mostly on Youth Advocacy.

Josh- Giro cycles out in Esher (Surrey). Only non-US dealer, but as the bikes are fully custom, the one we have are just examples of what can be done. And the semi-integrated Chris Kings are lovely!

where is she going? Tokyo or Osaka?

I was by myself, so thought I may as well go for it. The weather was almost perfect, and it was a lovely route. I live in Surrey, but normally just stick to the hills, so was great to see what else there is to ride.

What a glorious day! 4hour19 for the long, 81mile course, so i am happy.

turns out the shimano power link (or whatever is it called) was bent. Not sure how i managed that, but all working ok now. Thanks guys

The chain is new, and apparently mulch-directional for the 11 speed. Will post picks tonight.

Just built up new road bike- Swift Ultravox with Ultegra 6800, yet im getting some crazy chain suck, so much so that the thing is unridable.

Is there something simple i have forgotten to do? (its my first road bike build)

Haven't seen it anywhere. My shop approached Howies to stock riding stuff, but they wern't interested.

Just get it off wiggle? That way at least the return postage is free if stuff doesn't fit.
