might seem like an easy call. but hear me out!
i can get a Fuji new here (Japan) for £300, or i can get a Surly shipped out from http://www.jensonusa.com, for £450 (they are £700 here in Japan). http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/BI310L00-Surly+Steamroller+Complete+Bicycle.aspx + $160 postage
(or i can get a Steamroller frame for £200 plus $100 postage)
so. this is my first time getting a fixed, and dont wanna spend ALL my money, but the Surly seems like a good deal!
anyone heard any horror stories of shipped bikes? or importing stuff into Japan?
dont wanna keep boring you all with questions, but, well, i dont wanna buy the wrong thing!

@badtmy. its mainly the going down that bothers me, so single with brakes should cover that. if the hill is too steep to get up with 1 gear, fuck it, its too steep :P
and Tiawan, really? i guess that makes sense, the bike is rather cheap. oh well.
thanks again! Shimano leavers as well? id probably put risers/ flat bars (or at the very least turn the drops over and cut them down) so dont want the big road leavers

thanks Pj and eeehhh :)
its the going down that worries me on a fixed, ive only messed around on friends, so am hardly proficient (having watched youtube videos of guys in San Fransisco i know its possible).
langster's are, err 85,000yen which is £450 or so. I was hoping, if possible, to get something somewhat Japanese while i saw here, and i saw somewhere that the Fuji's are made in Japan?
and thanks on the sizing and drilling info, i didnt know :)

i dont really wanna spend more than a Fuji (£280 here in Japan) if i can help it. the main issue is, as it would be my only bike, and Kobe is a tad hilly, having the option of single over fixed is appealing to me.
also, i know 58 is kinda small for someone 6ft2, but would it be fine, seeing as im not racing? they dont come bigger than that!
-
so i want a singlespeed/fixie, with the option of using both, so rear brake needed for single. looking around, and it looks like you can only get a front brake for the Fuji. Are there any bikes in a simular style (bianchi comes to mind) that i can put brakes on?
im also in Japan, so somewhat limited choice here, especially in a 58/60 frame.
any suggestions would be great :)

@chris chrash 14stone - 185lbs or so, 85kgs i guess
and Billa, sorry, dont know much about keirin, so i guess your confidence in them explains everything, thanks!

im gonna be in Japan for a year, so would have to post them back to you from here.
and thanks alot for the info guys! Im in Kobe, and not Toyko, which, having seen the threads on here of the Keirin shops in Toyko, sucks! will have to just look around i guess. Got a quote on an OCEAN frame, but they are £600 or so, which, funnily enough, i cant afford.
the main problem is that im 6ft3, so finding a non-custom frame over here is gonna be tough i think

im in Japan, and wanna get a fixie after trying my m8's back home. His was based on an old road frame. Ive been riding BMX and raced XC for a while, what kinda frame geomatry would be best, and ideas?
as im in Japan, it seems kinda a waste not to get a Keirin frame, but they are expensive! id only be using it for commuting/riding around, no skids or the like
any help would be great, thanks

get a Nikon for sure, im really not a fan of the way Canon's feel, and on an even shallower note, the sound!
the only advantage of the d40x over the d40 is the megapixels, so if you arnt planning on blowing up the shots much, get the d40, and use the money you saved to get a better lens!
or save up and get a d50/d70 second hand! i have a d50 and its great, saving for a d300 tho, they are fking amazing!

hey guys. first off, im new to the whole fixed gear thing, but a good friend of mine is a courier, and ive been messing around on his bike for a while. Im now in Japan (Kobe), and looking for a bike to commute/ get around/ have fun/ something with limited maintance, and a fixie seems idea.
so basicly, i was wondering i anyone knew anywhere in Japan, especially Kobe, where i could buy parts to make a bike (or a cool shop that can do it for me, as i dont have any tools here).
im 6ft3 however, which im assuming is going to be rather a dissadvantage.
worth getting a frame in the US, and then the parts here? im guessing Shimano/Suigno parts will be cheaper here? the factories are only a bus ride away!
anyway, if anyone is feeling kind, and has the spare time to reply, then thanks alot.
just finished reading Black Hawk Down. which is alot better than the film! (which i thought was rather good)
If you like action books, but are tired of Clancy/McNab. i recommend it. if you can find it for 50p at the charity shop (like me) its even better!
