greenflash-gits...
when i was at school i droned on to my selectively deaf folks about needing a pair of these, but was told i didn't need them and my black gimp pumps were more than good enough - the sub text being i was shite at sport and they were not throwing money down the shitter if i wasn't going to make the school team.
looking at them now (both shoes and folks) is bringing back mixed feelings, i may have to buy more stuff from wiggle to put things right.

i don't live too far from re-cycles and when you ride past it looks really promising, but every bike product related question i asked on my one and only visit was met with a blank expression.
This really is the kind of place you go to spend as little as possible on a really shit bike for your kids.
However, i'm kicking myself for spending £130 on wiggle for a spanky new dura ace chainset and bb - when i could have saved up for a pair of £300 Sugino GT's ;-)

as a bit of a wrench monkey myself i'd have to say that those "kit-in-a-box" deals are a false economy.
as with much in life - buy cheap, buy twice - which can good with some things... but not with bike tools.
wiggle (for example) also have a good range of Park Tools, which (IMHO) are the dogs. They're not cheap, but they will last and stand up to regular use.

try 5 min wu, the 1min single leg high cadence (85+rpm) then (assuming you have gears), stick it in the big chainring and 3 biggest on the back now...
9 mins at 85rpm, 1min rest, switch to next smallest cog on the back and 8min at 85rpm, 1min rest - continue down to 5mins and 1min rest - gears get harder to turn but intervals are shorter
Or after warm up, 8mins in the big ring, start on smallest cog at the back and switch up a gear each minute - keep same effort - increase cadence (power meter/hrm is uesful).
2min rest, then in the big ring again 8min working back down the cassette to the smallest cog, 2 min rest then one more 8mins back up the cassette.Warm down for 5 mins.
expect to meet my friend PAIN...

mightyMouse Just watch out for the full on TT guys with their carbon wheels and twat hats.
...well, if you pass me do wave and say hello (nimble carbon wheels, white giro twat hat)
ps: victoria dock isn't "THAT" bad - Windsor is much worse - diesel on the water, duck shit everywhere and swans at pecking height - those f**kers are big when you're in the water with them and most have a major axe to grind with gimps in swimming caps.

done this for the last five years and will be there again for the oly distance AG race on sunday morning.
If your race is on saturday - you'll only go as far as the fly over bridge (turning back before the roundabout) and NOT on and through the limehouse link and up to the west end - they only close that part of the course for the sunday olympic distance races and the trip to parliament is only for the pro and sub 2.30 races. Everyone else turns back at tower bridge
the course is kinda flat, but the few short sharp lumps and the crosswind can make it feel more of an effort than it should be. The worst bit is the twisting and turning around excel. Catch a wheel on the kerb of a roundabout and you're picking gravel our of your arse that night - done it myself and seen lots of others do it every year.
as far as bikes go - i've seen people on mountain bikes with full-on knobblies, shopping bikes and fixies. Just ride what you like and enjoy riding. A club mate of mine did windsor last year on his fixie, with a a bike split which wasn't far behind me on my all singing and dancing tt bike - so as always it's not the bike - it's the legs.
If you've any leaning towards tri - London is a must as it's such a huge event. But as there's such a huge number of total newbies it's quite different to events like windsor, eton or milton keynes. With that in mind just remember to engage your brain on the bike course - you'll need it when someone just wobbles out in front of you.

the two in the pics are helmets (well, twat hats to give them their correct name) - rather than just fairings - i think uci regs require that they should all now offer some level of crash protection.
as an aside planet-x are flogging giro advantage twat hats for half price at the moment - £50 - including a rather nice matt black version

carnac quartz cycling shoes - in white kangaroo leather, with silver carbon straps - the daddy of them all.
