1955 Rotrax Vel D'Hiv
57cm square, 100/110mm spacing, drilled fork, mudguard eyelets front and rear.
Its generally in good condition, it has a fair amount of light surface rust. It also has two dents one under the toptube and a very small one on the drive side seat stay.
Here are some more pictures;

The eagle eyed might notice it says Alan Richards on it but I can assure you that this is a Rotrax. Alan Richards owned a shop in Birmingham called Tower cycles.

The frame number which is stamped twice on BB and once on the fork steerer is 55441. According to a piece written by Hillary Stone on Classic lightweights the '55' is the year of manufacture.

Hello,
Im very interested in the idea of drilling my stem to rid myself of the normal cable hanger i have on my bike, sorta like this;
However i get a little worried about putting extra holes in stuff. Anyone done this, or ever heard any horror stories of snapped stems etc...
I have a pillar drill and just enough skill to muscle my way to a holey stem. But im quite heavy and i like pulling on my bars alot and dont want my bars to fall off.
Any tips, comments, help, advice would be great
muchos thanks

This guy seems to be selling super cheap: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fizik-Gobi-XM-Wingflex-Manganese-NYLON-SHELL-Saddle-/290614926246?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item43a9ffdba6#ht_2503wt_1189
I bought mine from him a while back and the plastic base snapped while racing 3 months later. He replaced it very quickly with no hassle.
No packaging but alot of the stuff i buy from Chainreaction has none either.
I would happily use him again.

^^Thanks for the idea but im planning more of a xc/trail frame.
And luckily for me a friend was parting out his mtb. Its steel(which i like alot) and with sliding dropouts its ideal for my little project so i jumped at the chance.
Fast forward a few hours and i parted with some cash, helped him pull the bike apart and the frame was mine!
After a couple more hours i got bored so i threw the bike together with various bits i had lying around.
Its far from complete as most the finishing kit will be changed. The seatpost is to short and the bars aren't wide enough the stem is also a touch too long. However the worst bit is the chainring is a 42t which is around 8 teeth too many.
I also have a couple of other sligthly more drastic ideas. I thinking of removing the brake lugs from the forks to give a cleaner look. I will then either bare metal the the frame, forks and let it rust slightly followed by some clear coat or matte black the entire lot?
any thoughts ideas comments would be cool
Thanks

Having had a small obsession with hub gears for a while now i quite fancied giving one a go.
So i bought a new Carrera Subway 8 with a lovely Alfine 8 hub, however i have no real plans to use the Subway as i wanna go play in the mud with it so i guess its a project of sorts?
Full bike as i got it home last night; (sorry for the crap photo)
Note the none standard kona project 2 forks!Then i pulled it all apart late last night and this morning im left with a frame and a pile of parts;
Should be picking up a new(ish) slightly more fitting frame today sometime.
Its gonna be quite a mash of parts as im hoping to build it with stuff i have lying around.

Looking at the saddle height, would raising the stem to reduce the steerer be an option if you didn't want/need to cut it?
Looks great and +1 for more black bits.It would be an option. But i feel the bars need to be a touch lower if anything.
Im not fussed about chopping it, because i know i will take the forks off, get distracted by something more fun than using a hacksaw and a week later the bike might get put back together. Having a spare bike gives me no motivation to get things done quickly. -
Like the Cinelli, must be a really nice ride.
I would go same colour stem and seatpost, the headset looks actually pretty cool (I would be tempted to go black or silver) and cut the steerer down a tad, so that only one spacer is a'top the stem.
But I actually think it is a real good looking build ^ and that is fairly uniform suggestion of all bikes, so maybe it looks better for it...
Thanks it does indeed ride super well. Black stem is on the shopping list as is a black Chris King. I will be chopping the steerer when i stop being so lazy.
custom stem would look awesome with the cinelli, like this;
I would love a custom stem but i just cant justify the monies on one at the moment maybe next summer?
NICE cinelli up there! Which carradice is that?
Thanks, unsure of the model. It used to belong to my grand father, he has a few on various bike's. From seeing the other models in the current Carradice range i would say its similar in size to the Nelson. Here is a slightly better picture;
Ive relisted this frame due to some folks deciding it was the ideal thread for an argument?
