.. anyway, are they really that import for fixed, if im not that bothered about skidding??
While these two are comparing their inches with each other, if you're not bothered about skidding thats good. You'll have more control over the bike, and your tyres will last infinately longer. I think most people would agree to attach your feet to the pedals in some way though. Either with [better] toe clips, or maybe try some clipless pedals.
If you're not bothered about skidding then you're going to be using a front brake, but even so, you'll still often need to be able to slow your back wheel down using your legs, as the front brake can only do so much.
If you're really against the foot retention maybe try singlespeed with a back brake, or you're set on fixed, still fit a back brake and just never go too fast!

SKidding is pat of riding fixed
What?!?
Sorry but thats total bollocks. I know some people like to rely on a skid as their only means of stopping, but there is no reason why you really ever have to - unless thats the style of riding you wish to adopt.
I agree that retaining your feet to the pedals is particularly important when they are going to be constantly in motion. Some people don't, but you really don't want your feet flying or slipping off the pedals when they're zipping round.

I ride 46*17 in Manchester. But its all dependent on how fast you want to go, how much stopping and starting you want to do, how much you like your knees...
Check out http://www.ibikemcr.org.uk/ for bike related goings on that might interest you in Manchester. Where abouts do you work?

Me. Couple others too. You missed out on all the fun last month... http://www.ibikemcr.org.uk/festivalresults.htm
Fear not, theres always stuff happening. "Treasurecat" on 16th (next Friday) - meeting at the Sandbar at 7. Thats fixed only though, for some reason... did you get a bike sorted out? But theres a bbq and general tomfoolery after, for everyone and anyone in Platt Fields.
Also, theres bike polo tonight, and every Thursday, 6pm Platt Fields park - basketball court near the bmx track.

So, I'm on here to ask for your advice. But I guess I've already got it. I'm scared if I attend the Manchester Bicycle Polo Tournament that I will lose my credibility. I just feel that if the London teams don't come to play (even though they said they would) that it surely won't boost my social status by turning up.
...and anyway, I was only going in the hope of glimpsing Rakans tight pants. Unfortunately Harry Halls is no patch on Brick Lane Bikes. I've heard they use crank wrenches to remove cranks. Whats with that??

It's sad to say but London makes you lazy to traveling the uk.
I figured as much, good on you for identifying it though. London to Manchester can be done for less than £15 return on a train with a bike though. Still, next time a decent event comes up in London, I'm sure a Manchester gang will put in an appearance - living 200 miles from London puts Manchester in the commuter belt, and the £8.50 I in rent I pay per month in the grim and impoverished ol' North means a train ticket down to the bright lights is well worth the price of just catching a glimpse of Brick Lane Bikes in itself.

Email the Messenger of Doom... he's from Birmingham. http://messengerofdoom.wordpress.com/ - nice guy, if he chooses to reveal his secret identity to you...
- he should be coming to parts of the I Bike MCR festival (in Manchester) http://www.ibikemcr.org.uk/timetable.htm - theres an alleycat next week, and polo and a fixed skills and sprint competition the week after - actually I thought some Londo' people should be coming up too, but we've heard nothing from them in ages so I guess Londons just so great no-one ever wants to leave.
Despite pretending to be the UKs second city, I don't think theres a lot going on in BHX http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_city_of_the_United_Kingdom...
...this site was launched last year http://www.messbhx.co.uk/ - but nothing ever seemed to come of it.
Pop up for the I bike mcr festival though - it'll be good.

Are you coming? - the festival starts this Friday!
The shop behind Sandbar is Bicycle Boutique, and the shop in Chorlton must be Ken Fosters...
Also check out Harry Halls on Witworth Street West or GBH just off near the top of Tib Street. Both will do you a good job.

I've used a pedal spanner as a lever against the bb casing before - twice! Just lodge it in and lever until you hear a bit of a creek, turn the crank 45 degrees lever again and keep going til it pops off. I've found that a reasonably reliable way of doing it, and even knowingly put on some stripped cranks on a beater bike with the knowledge (hope) that I could eventually get them off again this way.

ChrisNW I'd love to be there, but cant.
Anyone doing a ride in Liverpool/Manchester area?Doing a ride FROM Manchester to Liverpool, well Formby on the 4th of April. Not intended as a tribute to Sheldon, but I'm sure all impending en route mechanical issues will be dedicated to the great man.
