I'm not sure what kind of a venue you are after, but I went to a birthday party at this place:
http://www.6stchadsplace.com/ I am sure it would do the trick for you. I did a quick google maps and it is just inside your 6 mile limit. 60 people would be no problem and there would still be space inside for bikes as well as railings outside. I am pretty sure that the guy who's birthday it was said that it was free hire on saturday evenings. -

The Hartington cheese shop is ace. Load up on cheese to bring back. The Duke of Devonshire is a nice pub in the village. The George at Astonfield is a nice pub but the landlady is a miserable old bag. The Miners in Brassington is a nice boozer, so too is the Druids Inn at Birchover. Although I think it has had a lick of paint recently.
For riding, if you don't have a mega pimp road bike that can take a little dirt, try to include a section of either the high peak trail or tissington trail. They are parts of a converted railway line. It is now nice flat cinder path all the way and makes for some really nice senic riding.
A slightly off topic suggestion, if you like a quality bit of knitwear (who doesn't?) John Smedly knitter of reet posh jumpers is based in the peak district at Lea Bridge and has a factory shop. I went there last time and picked up some bargains.

something i've been thinking about for a while: there are a fair few homeless hostels or drop-in centres i london that hold bike maintenance sessions, courses etc. there's a social enterprise in islington that provides work/rehab by giving people the training to do up old bikes and sell them on (was in the lcc e-newsletter wotsit this month) but lots of others have sessions once a week or something (crisis, thamesreach, etc). just judging by the amount of bits and bobs of bikes i have lying around my room, i reckon there must be a fair old pool of decent quality bits: brakes, cables, pedals, saddles whatever that could be collected at drinks and donated to these places. last year i called a couple just to ask the question and they were very enthusiastic.
Not unlike this ^^, but what about a charity bike jumble? Enough people have myriad odds and sods lying about that could be donated. Use a function room of a pub or somewhere convenient. A good excuse for people to meet up; get some bits for your bike(s), give money to charity. Bakers could rustle up some mince pies / festive cakes etc to flog as well.
I have time and resources (van) if needed.

Clive, look up gotham bikes (oddly, their webiste is www.togabikes.com ), they have three shops on Manhattan. I went into one this summer and hired a bike for the day. The guy was really nice. I seem to recall that they had road bikes for hire as well as fixed and hybrid. Give them a bell to check the deal.

I walked along the highline this summer. It is a lovely space in the middle of the city. Lots of people were using it as a place to have lunch, wander, relax etc. There were some really nice design features that used / preserved some of the parts of the railway. It is quite short at the moment, but I think that it is an ongoing project and is in the process of being extended. Well worth a visit if you go to NYC.

Hi James, good report. Thanks.
One thing that I thought of earlier (but too late to ask you about), was to seek an opinion on riding fixed. I am assuming that you went to the training riding fixed, was this mentioned? Is riding fixed considered to be more or less dangerous? - Note, I say considered before the obvious 'it depends on the rider, my bike handling skills are ace'' comments are made. It would be interesting to know whether those offering cycle training have an opinion on this. Whilst for those who post here, hipsterfixieskidderslave bikes seem ubiquitous, do they still constitute a niche concern? Or would it have been commented upon if you were brakless / had no foot retention mechanism / ss + fr brake etc.
Just a thought really. It is quite possible this wasn't even touched on!

Not sure if its of Jewish Origin, after googling it appears to be something started in the Naval world before the advent of proper fridges, but it is very popular amongst the Jewish community yes :)
I wonder if it has anything to do with the practice of salting meat to draw out the blood - part of kosher preparation.

The comments on the Mail are genius:
whilst no one likes to see someone die so young, I have to say that I saw Stephen Gately in Joseph, and he absolutely murdered the songs. Singing live with no electronic wizardry showed just how bad his singing was totally flat and tonless. I could have made a better job. He certainly only got the job because of who he was not for his singing talent as he had none.

The health risks of a homosexual lifestyle are massive and will shave 20 years off the life of someone with few underlying risks.
Another disturbing aspect of this whole affair has been the reaction of the hoi poloi who refer to him now being an "angel" in Heaven! What? Firstly, this shows that people don't know what angels are, and secondly, the idea of and the fear of mortal sin has vanished!
Chris Morris as DM troll?
