I was with friends two years ago and we took three bike boxes from London to Nice. We didn't have any trouble at all. On the TGV, it was just a bit of a jumble of bags and cases etc. We put the boxes out of the way as far as possible, but when the train stopped each time, two of us got up to step off the train with the boxes. This meant people with smaller bags could get on and off easily. When everyone was on, the boxes could go back in the way. It sounds a bit of a faff, but from memory, after leaving Paris, we only stopped three or four times and they were all well south - Aix en Provence, St Raphael etc. So not really to much hassle. It is also worth remembering that if you are travelling in the next couple of months, everyone is on holiday, so the train will be busy - be assertive about your seat reservation (not that the plebs are allowed in first class to get in the way).
Hope this is helpful. -

I got really into swimming when I lived in Scotland, but haven't done it since moving back down south. They have these Victorian swimming baths in Scotland (3 of them in Edinburgh and Glasgow, and I was a member of all of them at different points) which are run as not-for-profit enterprises. they are just completely different to swimming baths down here, at least, I've never found an equivalent. They have turkish warm rooms where you can read for hours, different bits for men and women (and it seems to be a thing that all the women just hang out nekkid, which took a bit of getting used to), with these massive armchairs and all the papers. I used to spend all day in there.
But the best thing was they had these amazing original rings and trapezes above the pools – I got really into doing the trapeze over the pool. You also get a permanent box to leave your toiletries in, and some indoor shoes, and you leave your costume there and they wash it and dry it in time for your next visit. And provide towels so you can spontaneously turn up and everything's there. The pools were so quiet – it was always just me and the pensioners. I went every single day for years, and did 45 minutes. I miss it - I'd love to find a good place down here. Is the Ironmonger's one a nice old place?
Plurabelle, did you ever see the documentary about one of these places? It was aired a few years ago now, but reading your post reminded me of it. It was full of some lovely shots of the pool and members, as well as interviews with old boys who had been swimming there all their lives. I have just had a quick google for it, but can't find anything much. It might be this:
Film: Liquid Paradise - memories of 120 years of swimming in "the Pond" Production of a documentary film, archive and photographic exhibition about a Victorian swimming pool in Edinburgh. This involved wide ranging interviews with local community members and pool users.

I'm not sure though as I don't quite see why an architect would be making that kind of film. -

Great thread idea.
+1 for Adam and Joe.
I also quite like the Tom Robinson introducing from six music. Can be a bit hit and miss, but some interesting things that I invariably decide I will look up / listen to more of then promptly forget.I haven't listened to it, but the blurb from this Monday includes:
'The only band to write a 'bohemian opera' about cycling, The Grave Architects, rode by to chat with Tom about their new single...' -

On the 'ancestral link' no one has mentioned his Sierra Leonian heritage. I didn't think he came off too badly here:

All the details are on the poster at the bottom of the page I linked to. It is open from noon. By the time I get there yesterday, some of the ale heads were looking a little worse for wear. Also, a big shout out for Colin, the bearded head of 'security.' Someone pinched my glass when I nipped out for a fag. I had left it under the watchful gaze of the chap on the door. Colin was summoned, bemoaned the glass nickery of some types at such an event then kindly marched me upstairs to get me another glass for free. Much appreciated.

I went to the beer festival in Hackney last night: http://www.pigsear.org.uk/#Festivals:32Banner
Well worth the £3 entry. I made a valliant attempt to sample as much as possible. I certainly know about it this morning. It's on until Saturday, go along if you can. Some seiously good beards and bellies on display as well!
On Saturday morning, I got up and rode with a colleague and eight pupils from London to Spalding, Lincs. 110 miles. Today, we got up in Spalding, and rode to Berverley, Yorks. 90 miles. My arse hurts. Tomorrow, we will ride to Catterick Bridge. 75ish miles but hillier. By Thurday we will hopefully arrive in Edinburgh.
Currently, I am lying on my bed in the guesthouse wondering where to take the kids for dinner. The eat all you can pasta joint down the road is looking good for our custom.
