as far as i'm aware you can't remove a coaster brake from a hub, as they are integrated into the hub's internal assembly. drum/roller brakes, however, are usually removeable.
wicksie - maybe ask the ebay seller to send you a pic of the non-drive side of the hub? or ask him for the part number which should be written on the center of the hub shell?

definitely. the indicator chain would get mashed pretty quickly.
sturmey do make an 8s hub which has a rotary gear selector (no bits that stick out from the frame), which would be cheaper than an alfine, probably around the same price range as nexus (though with a bigger gear range than alfine or nexus 8)

nope, wouldn't be a problem. it's best if you set it up with a ghost shift at the bottom end instead of just locking out the top end (ie using 2nd and 3rd shift, not 1st and 2nd). that way you don't risk pulling too hard on the the cable and putting a load of stress on the internals of the shifter. plus, you often get a bit more of trim that way.

Anyone looking for a Gingerbread ROM for the Desire....Redux is excellent...fast, clean and good battery life. I tried Oxygen and Gingervillian...both OK, but not as good as Redux imho...
thanks for this, just flashed it, and so far is better than oxygen.
