mdja I had a crack like this on the bike I grew up with and rode for about 10 years. After a while the crack grew longer, and then one summer's day I left it out in the sun and the frame buckled at the crack. I don't know how to fix it but don't leave it unless you don't mind it getting bigger. It's unlikely to cause you any injuries in the meantime though.
Was that on a steel frame?

tynan
asm
I think the real use of that question is that, by evoking a sense of mystery, it provokes thought in providing an answer. What is important is not the answer, but the fact that it makes people think.
Don't get all philosophical on ma' ass ! ;P
I agree 100% that answers are often the trivial part, but in this case the set-up is so basic that the thought provoked by this crap question is pretty shallow, it is essentially a trick question, equivocation.
It's not a trick question! The 'tree falling in a forest' question is a really useful way of separating our realist and anti-realist theories. For instance, an idealist would say if no-one hears it (or is experiencing it) then not only does the tree not make a sound, but the tree itself does not even exist.

I've got my hands on a lovely new steel frame, for an absolute bargain. Hurrah!
Thing is... it was a bargain because it has a crack in the head tube, at the bottom running for about 1/2 inch up vertically. It is a tiny crack, so obviously I want to bodge it up somehow as I am keen to build it up. I have tried a hose clip, but it does not fit, so my latest thought is to whack in the headset and then get someone to spot weld over the crack. There is no gap between the sides of the crack, and it ain't going to split like aluminium would if you did the same.
Do you think this will work okay, or do you have any other suggestions?
Cheers for your thoughts...

BRM
Hutch
pj i'm not really in favour of moral equivalence... but
i got assaulted by a group of lads in a school playground whilst teaching, they'd come in off the street and i'd asked them to leave. the police made portentious sounds about how 'it was a very serious matter' and it was really 'important that this kind of thing didn't happen' and also mentioned the stabbing of Phillip Lawrence, etc. i spent three hours leaving a statement in marylebone police station, they said they were going to pursue it actively.
18 months later i haven't heard a FUCKING WORD. not a thing.
two weeks ago a copper and spastic in a CSO outfit stops me for STANDING over my bike on a pavement, not riding it, i'd pulled off theobald's road to answer my phone. he threatens me with a £100 fine, a criminal record, and is generally a rude moron with no brain, just a small sub-section of brain matter that tells him over and over 'you have got a brain, jeff, and you are a force for good'.
Being a bit of an empiricist lately, i have only this to say, they can go FUCK THEMSELVES.
Where d'you teach pj? And what d'you teach?
That's a sting operationn if I've ever heard one.
Don't answer, PJ.
:)
Look, Constable BRM, we've had words about you revealing stings before, now back to the station with yer...

johnny h according to my pal in London Firebrigade, Islington fire station was burglared in november and the tool they use for cutting people out of cars was nicked.
hence all the cut bars, locks, poles etc in the norf region.watch out folks
Yeah, I have actually seen one of those cutters in action and it is frightening. A mate of mine who works in the actions unit of an NGO helped me out when I lost the keys to my bike, and it was locked up outside a pub. He brought along some cutters, we rocked up and they went through a kickass Kyrptonite lock in 4 seconds.
Also, worryingly, no-one in the pub garden even challenged us (although I had photos of the bike elsewhere to show it was mine, in the hope that someone would)

Riiiiight... got my new frame, and need stuff...
Anyone got some **25.4 riser bars **they want to flog to me?
If anyone has a spare **RH Goldfinger brake **or similar, let me know.
Also decent-ish 1 1/8 headset needed if you wanna get rid of one.
FINALLY.... a 27.2 seatpost. in black preferably.
I have not too much to offer in return - a 25.4 nearly-new Push seatpost? Pair of not-really-that-great silver tektro v-brake levers. 'Classic' Weinnmann brakes + levers off a 70's Carlton. Or, cash.
I will be looking on ebay as well of course!
Cheers

tynan Anyone here run their conversion or track bike without chain tugs ?
Will cranking down the track nuts real tight hold the wheel enough or is it simply worth getting tugs so you don't have to over torque your track nuts (and screw up the threads) ?
Never used chain tugs on my conversion fixed wheel. Never had a problem.

This is one of those rare occasions where I'd say you need to build it up as a geared bike.

scoober
pj whatever the epistemology or accuracy
not wanting to be a smartass, but I think you meant etymology. Im not sure this would be covered by a theory of knowledge.
Yeah, but the theory of knowledge would determine how we came about to understand the concept of fixed wheel/gear - innate knowledge or through our senses?

markrjohnson Riding on the footpath/pavement is a summary offence triable at magistrates court only. Therefore, it is not a recordable offence as defined by the Rehabilitation of Oddenders Act. As such, no you do not get a criminal record, no more then you would if you are done for speeding, red traffic light etc.
However, if you are stopped and have the offence pointed out you become arrestable (S25 PACE 84) if you fail to give your details, or it is reasonably suspected that your details are false/incorrect.
If stopped be polite, say nothing except to give your details, show some form of ID with an address then ask:
"Am I under arrest?"If the answer is no, then immediatly leave.
You are not obliged to answer questions, even though the wording of the police caution infers that you are.
Fight the POLICE STATE>
round of applause
That seems clear. You a legal bod, or just Joe Interested?

ChrisNW Ref: Wheel being fixed to frame.
Is the wheel fixed to the frame? The axle certainy is in the same way that the gear is fixed to the wheel. Is the axle part of the wheel, or is the wheel just free to spin about an axle to which it is not fixed?
Yeah, that was not a 100% serious point. Essentially, for me: fixed wheel = no freewheel. Fixed gear just means single cog.

From Wiki, so pinch of salt needed:
"Fixed gear" is the standard term in the US, whilst "fixed wheel" is used in the UK[28][29]. The confusion comes about because "fixed", "gear" and "wheel" can have more than one meaning in this context. "Fixed" can mean not able to freewheel (coast), it can also mean not variable. "Gear" can refer to the sprocket or to a gear ratio. In the US, "fixed-gear" is used to mean the gear (sprocket) is attached to the hub without a freewheel. In the UK, "fixed-wheel" is the normal term, meaning the opposite of freewheel, whereas fixed gear usually means one gear (gear ratio).
[28] Time Trial Regulations. Cycling Time Trials. Retrieved on 2007-09-11. “Bicycles with a fixed wheel shall have a left hand threaded locking device securing the fixed sprocket. Similarly, tricycles with a fixed wheel shall have a suitable locking device or alternatively shall include an integral system as part of the design. Machines with fixed wheel require only a brake operating on the front wheel(s).”
