I am less worried about someone else's possible view of me and more so about both their safety and my own.
If you hurl abuse at them they won't think about the fact that they are wrong - they will just think the cyclist is a wanker. Yep you have to give up the satisfaction of yelling at them if you want them to remember for the next time, but that's the deal. Anger will resolve nothing, however satisfying it may feel in the heat of an argument.
If people were all just that little bit nicer to each other instead of grabbing the first opportunity to lose their temper then maybe peds would have more consideration in turn and not make the mistake in the first place.

It serves a very good purpose, it informs the pedestrian that what he or she just did it entirely unacceptable, dangerous to both of you and serves as a reminder that when you wonder into the road people are going to get very very pissed off for very good reason.
Like I say above, to not shout and make a scene is, to me at least, irresponsible. To smooth over the situation and let the pedestrian leave with the impression that 'all is fine, everyone carry on', does no good.
Maybe I am running into the idiots that you have already run into then and let wonder away with the impression that to walk into the road with a carefree abandon is 'not such a big deal'.
;P
Suggesting that you have to rant in order to inform the pedestrian that they are in the wrong does not say much for your skills of communication.
If you get the point across calmly but making sure they know they are in the wrong, then they may remember it for next time. If you just shout abuse at them, they'll just walk off thinking 'what a cunt'.

There is a gang of bike thieves in N1 area that nicked a firefighters cutting tool about a year ago. The place has been plagued with bike thefts ever since. However, they used to target bikes locked in quieter areas, so it may not be them...
... the cutting tool does go through most d locks in around 5-20 seconds though. Boooo.

November was WET...but yeah good fun as well really.
Am going tonight, so holler if you see me - I will be riding my new iro that I put together a few weeks ago (look out for tall skinny bugger on a black iro). And I've committed the sin of breaking the 5th commandment: Thou shalt not put risers on your fixed wheel....
