So strange that they only put guard mounts on the rear. Lovely colour though!
I questioned this with Surly and they said they were putting the eyelets on other drop outs, so why not the Steamroller. They just weren't prepared to fork out to change how they make the fork. Why not go all the way?

did i see this rolling into Brixton a few months back? lovely bike
I've only had it a couple of weeks and have not ventured south of the river on it as yet.
Thanks +richardshill it feels like it's the bike that my old Surly always wanted to be.

After my Surly Streamroller frame was destroyed - the "Greenroller" - I grabbed the parts and built it up again around a Bob Jackson Vigorelli frame in British Racing Green. I am very happy with the gold lug liner and barber pole in ivory, as is the logo.
Went for a frame that would take an Ahead stem, which meant oversized tubes, and added mudguard eyelets and a drilled hole for a rear brake.
Some key components: V-Sprint built wheels with Miche hubs, Brooks Cambrian C17 saddle and Carradice zip roll saddlebag, Factory 5 chainset. And a brass bell attached to a special spacer from Fresh Tripe.

Only just saw this--crap news, David, but I like the way you don't even answer not4sale's question whether you're OK except by a rather bike-focused picture essay. :) Hope you are and nothing wrong was found subsequently.
I was sore for a day or so. Nothing serious. Thank you.

Sorry to hear this - hope you are ok - that is/was a fairly old roller wasn't it ?
Well, pretty old (10 years) but it had been enjoying a new lease of life with a respray and the eyelets/cable stops added...
You can see the Factory 5 chain set, gold chain and Cambian saddle I subsequently fitted and the brand new bends in the tubes below. The pained expression is priceless. A witness at the scene took this pic. I don't have a long selfie stick.

My Steamroller got totalled when I was taken out by a motorbike yesterday. Sad day. Most parts are OK, aside from the rear wheel which only needs a true, so I just need a frame (53cm).
In terms of replacement, my frame was a little unique in that I had added cable stops and mudguard eyelets. If I got another 'roller (RRP £400) and added the fittings and had a new paint job it would take the cost closer to £650.
I'm looking for some alternative frames that have eyelets and cable stops. So far my list is:
- Surly Cross Check (£400): needs cantilever brakes and the clearance is huge.
- The Condor Tempo (£700): might look to nickable on the street.
- Pearson Now You See Me (£800 complete): don't know if they sell it as a frame only.
Any other suggestions for eyelet/cable stop frames would be very welcome.

Both saddles under dibs.
