So, I reckoned we needed another ride: fun, not hectic; night time so a bit more interesting but not too late as it will be a 'work' night for all those commutengers out there (like me!)...
Being as it's Hallowe'en coming up soon, an appropriate theme seemed to be graveyards or cemeteries. There's loads of them about: check the London cemeteries site. Anyway, the 'Magnificent Seven' seem to be the ones to see, but I'm too much of a n00b that I know for sure I won't make it around them all in one evening. So... here's the proposal: a north London cemeteries ride, with an extension southwards for those who live that way (or with more stamina than me!):
Start time: 6.30pm (for a 7pm departure)
**Start place: ** South entrance to Brompton Cemetery
Route: see below for details
Anyone wanna come??[EDIT:]
OK, details are as above. North London route is now available: map.[li]We meet at the south entrance to Brompton Cemetery on Fulham Road. The park is open until 8pm in the summer and 4pm in the winter, so there's a chance we get to cycle through it towards kensal rise, in which case the map above becomes slightly void and we improvise.[/li]
[li]Kensal Green cemetery closes at 17:00 so we'll only get to hang around outside. Interestingly, this is one of the only cemeteries (the only one?) that is still functioning - and has been run by the same company since its inception in 1830! [/li]
[li]Highgate Cemeteries are closed by 17:00 so we also won't get to go into them, but will get to see both the East and the West on the bike ride, I think.[/li][li]Abney Park is closed. But a very cool cemetery.[/li]
[li]Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park closes the main gates at dusk, but the 'kissing gates' remain open at all times.[/li]
[li]Nunhead Cemetery - about which I cannot find very much information[/li]
[li]West Norwood Cemetery is in Lambeth and closes at 18:00 so we won't get to see it.[/li] -

yeah, i was just rereading it all... think yours is fine peejay78 (and, thanks for looking after the bikes while we got bagels -hope you've still got your multi-relationships going this evening) but mine was maybe below the belt. cornelius: apologies.
oh yeah, and a couple of photos to come a bit later, if they're any good (didn't look yet).

hippy You wont need to replace the wheels on the Fuji straight up. Fit a brake and ride it.
The money you save on Tube fares you can put towards a new frame or replacing components..
Still keep an eye on this frame as well as ebay in general but you will find most 'bargains' are ramped up to stupid territory by dumb bidders.
That's what I'd do on low funds. Off the shelf is always cheaper. Everyone here will say build your own but if you've got no other bike I say "fsck that! get on a bike asap!"this is what i did and i'm not regretting it one little bit!! i got lemond fillmore (bit more expensive than the fuji track) with straight handlebars and new brakes, but am already planning various bits of other stuff i would like to do soon - and i'm definitely saving on travel already, i can feel it :)

i've seen him around grays inn road, and then locked up outside a pub in islington - hemmingford arms. that was early-mid september, tho, on a wednesday night

Frank Glass
Object17
Frank Glass yeah bro, its fun...bikes...peeps...beers...polo...whats not to like?
Beer?
yeah man, a beer at the pub the ride leaves from and perhaps a couple cans if desired once the ride reaches the polo/chilling spot...
maybe that was an objection? but then i guess it should have been: Beer? Beer? Beer? Beer? Beer? Beer? Beer? Beer? Beer? Beer? Beer? Beer? Beer? Beer? Beer? Beer? Beer?

arup I'll see if I can get someone to teach my class on Sunday morning. If so then I'm in. I've been meaning to make up for the traffic jam of a BHS ride.
ahhh... it all becomes clear. you are the vicar, therefore you must have won the race taalked about on this other thread

how about trying tor, breglis?
it's designed for anonymous browsing in exactly the situation you describe. i've used it very successfully from behind corporate firewalls. biggest problem is that its' popularity has increased greater than the bandwidth available so there are times when it can be pretty slow (think: when america is awake) but i have found is often ok in the morning. must admit i haven't been using it recently as have good and unrestricted access and (not currently!) trying to hide anything.
good luck.

runcible rakan Who are the UCL fixies?
i'm another one in that area - but i lock up inside the LSHTM (you can see the bikes down the side of the building from gower st). i got a lemond fillmore, fixed, with straight handlebars and wear an old (like, 15 years) timbuk2 bag. i saw at least one fixie ride past last night (a blue one?) about quarter to six last night as i was waiting for some friends to cross the road just by waterstones and gower street.

MA3K I am bringing whoever shows up at my RP ride to see you guys - so wait up if we are 15 minute late..
you mean it normally leaves on time?
i'm trying to get some friends to come along, too, but i'll definitely be there this month (and not adding my name to the list cos i can't commit forever and anon) -
PeterD
roland Was someone videoing the mini-TT? I would like to see that footage...
Yup that was me....havent had a chance to look at the footage properly all week as been very busy but will cobble something together later today. From what ive checked back it looks okay...very grainy cos of shit light so may make it all B&W...
so take it you didn't have a chance yet, then?? also, wasn't there someone else who was videoing the night, too? i'm looking forward to seeing all the other footage too. -

You could make a small difference with your hanky and get a very different type of spanky.

hey, i had no great plans to cycle the Blackwall tunnel!! But then maybe you're confusing me... I'm not Luke.
Saying that, I did finally stack in huge style this morning as I was cycling down Caledonian Rd approaching Kings X, checking out the traffic in front of me for which way was the best way through the cars at the lights... Hit a massive pothole that was right under my nose and went head-over-heels! Somehow, I managed to land on my leftt shoulder, rolling over and absorbing the impact, and ending up with the contents of my bag safe (computer still working) and bicycle in hand - albeit upside down with the wheels in the air. So, a few grazes, minimal blood and no scratches on the frame. Oh, and my helmet didn't even touch the ground - but I'm still gonna be wearing one! -
hmm, i think all my images are quite large, sorry about that. so i've put them up somewhere else: http://asm.dreamhosters.com/photos/lfgss/20070929/docklands-orig.html and http://asm.dreamhosters.com/photos/lfgss/20070929/docklands-small.html for those with slower connections or restricted screen size.
hope you enjoy them,

yeah, that was a fucking awesome introduction, folks! thanks to all for helping me flip my wheel over whilst fixing PeterD's tyre and all the support on my first fixed gear ride - i'm sure i had some beginner's luck in the time trial ;)
i've got a few pics that i'll put up soon somewhere and look forward to joining you on the next one.
PS, anyone any idea of how far we travelled? my whole body is certainly telling me about it today.
a few pics of today now online.... small version | BIG (original) versions
you might wanna look at the small ones, and then view the images individually
