cheap folding bikes, mamachari all sorts pretty cheap. you can get nicer bikes from tokyu hands department stores but they will cost more.
if you have someone to help who speaks the language then you should be able to get something extremely easily.

uggs have been mentioned before but deserve another mention and the sketchers brand and all its marketing really tenses me up.
those little flaps on supermarket meat such as bacon that makes it appear like you can peel back the top.
discovering that your sram cassette, slx rd and sram 9 spd chain are not compatible by your chain snapping 2 miles away from the top of a mountain on a loaded touring bike, with no chain tool in rural china.

wheelsmiths,
just used some spokes and built up a wheel and there is about 3-4mm of thread still exposed. i've not fully tensioned the wheel but i think it will only use about .5mm of exposed thread.
i used standard 12mm nipples and can get 16mm cheap but is this a bodge or and acceptable solution?
in the past i've taken the nipple over the thread by +1-2mm, just got my measurements a bit out on this one.
cheers.

I wouldn't say that it's a 'braking system' as such--it's a transmission system that can be used to brake, much as it can be used to propel the bike forward. But I don't want to nit-pick, it's only a question of definition.
You might not define it as a braking system but the article certainly does and implies that the law also defines it as one.

the tent i use for touring weighs about 2kg its a coleman 360, but on a dewy morning or after a rainy night you can add a fair bit extra to that, i will try and get a lighter tent when i need get a new one. saving weight does make a big difference, even with a decent tourer with good racks.
i use a ajungilak tundra 3 season sleeping bag, it packs up tiny is light and really comfortable.

You need a fairly good knowledge of bikes to fully understand this article but then it is in the bike blog.
I don't like the way you title the article "Cycling without brakes? You're breaking the law", and then that you go on to define the fixed wheel drivetrain as a valid braking system, it's misleading. I suppose you would get your article less attention if you were to have headlined it "Cycling with only a rear braking system? You are breaking the law".
