Hybrid donated to my son.

The only chain I've broken is a cheapo TAYA chain bought from Halfords, which had a crappy sigma connector:

It was the sigma connector that split. Chain was luckiliy still held together by the rivet pins, so no injury. I replaced the sigma connector with a standard rivet plate connector. I dont bother with carrying a chain tool and chain links, but do carry a spare chain connector.

Last week the single chainring/crank on my hack started slipping going uphill. The chainring was clamped to the crank arm and couldnt take the toll of fixed gear no more. Now replaced with a dotek spider crankset.

Wear a helmet for the daily commute (26 miles round trip). It has saved my head from nasty bumps and grazes a few times over the past 3 years. However, for local short trips I often ride without it. Also helps keep your head warm through winter.

Another thing to check is that the cleats are screwed tight to the sole of your shoes.

I have been riding fixed to work (13 miles each way)for the past 2 years. It's ideal for the commute and my hybrid has been collecting dust since its creation. However, recently I have been doing longer weekend rides 50miles+, also on my fixed. Fellow riders are geared and I have had to walk up a few steep hills (on my 74" fixed). Gives me an excuse to buy another bike, which I ordered last week, and to whip their arse next time round!

Been using m520s fixed for 2 years, pedals have taken a few hard grinds, but still performing well.

Hacksawed mines. Leave nuts on to assist in setting the cut threads. Mark cutting line with tape allround, so you can folow the line. File off burs, job done.

Best to start off with a new chain, sprocket and chainring. Then alternate between two new chains every 500 miles. That way the sprocket and chainring wear more slowly and evenly.

vice up the fixed cup carefully, and twist the frame.

My local LBS charged a fiver. Just took a look at the bike (in pieces) in my boot and told me the write-off note would be ready the next day. I also claimed the fiver back from the insurance company.

I've used my Bontrager racelite hardcases since September last year (autumn, winter, spring and summer). 4,000 miles+ and only had 2 P's, not bad for tenner a tyre. Plus, they're super grippy in the wet. Not good for skidding though.

You will need to fabricate some tools and the use of a vice, probably not worth the bother.

Often thought about it, and I dont think it makes any difference, as any wear will be in the rolling bushes.

Not sure about the black ACI spokes, but the silver double butted ones on my self-build wheel have served me well (2500+ miles) on my 32 hole CXP22 rims with on-one hub.

And yes, spokes do break, but it's not usually as the result of an impact, typically they just break as you're rolling along. Spokes break as a result of fatigue. If your wheel is loose, then every time the wheel goes around, it flexes a tiny bit, and eventually it breaks. In fact spoke breakages are the most telling sign of wheels that don't have high enough tension. If your spokes are tight, the spoke doesn't move as the wheel turns, so they can last much longer. Thus a high-tension wheel is one that will last a long time with few spoke breakages.

I prefer a chainguard ring on my cranks, so am currently limited to 42T.

My chainring needs replacing after 3000 miles. Is this average wear & tear?
Its a steel 42T chainring that came with a new cheap pair of DOTEK cranks. I think the chanring must have ben fitted slightly off centre as some of the teeth grouped together are worn with rough edges.The chain was replaced at 1500 miles and kept fairly clean.

I am now going to replace the chainring, sprocket and chain. The old miche 15T sprocket doesn't look too bad, but not worth the chance of it buggering my new drivetrain.

I am going to buy an EAI 1/8 sprocket, and KMC Z510HX 1.8 chain. Any pointers on a good steel chainring? I need a 5 spoke 130BCD 3/32 chainring. I would like to increase the number of teeth on the front chainring, but the 130BCD may be a limiting factor. Gear inches to be kept around 74".
