I run SS, not fixed, with just a front brake. I use a cut down Avid SD7 lever which you can adjust how muich leverage you get, moving up or down the lever. I have it at the top which means the shortest pull for the most stopping on a sidepull. Its amazing, admittedly I'd use a rear brake if I had one but I really don't feel as if I need one, the stopping is literally the equivalent of an onld HS33 I have on my trials bike.

Maybe its the split link? Where the plate that covers it has come off therefore sticking out more, as the pins are longer on that link. Check to make sure the other plate doesnt come off, otherwise you'll be riding and the chain will just separate. If youve lost the plate that keeps them on, you could get a new split link, or relpace the split link with a normal link from spare chain.
