How long are they locked there?
guess all day normal business hours. i see the bike there early in the morn and actually seen the guy pick up his trek bout 6ish
Pretty easy for a cyclist who also locks up there to eye off my Phils or the lovely TI Raleigh paintjob and think "Ooh I'll have that". Surely not all bike thefts are desperate smack heads?
true. didnt think of that...why was i eyein that trek!?! ;) nah, just couldnt believe there's still a "safe" public spot in london.
cyclists that steal from fellow cyclists...may the bend-i-bus be with you, always..

my work is in lombard street. lucky for me there's a carpark downstairs where i can store my bike. but loads of ok bikes locked around bank/monument stations and tiny side streets. incl a newish trek road bike which seems to survive the day chained outside bank station. once saw a specialized dolce there with the front wheel unlocked...and even that didnt get stolen.
maybe would be theives feel out of place with the no of suits passing through the place

if you want to build and want to look for parts. be very careful with ebay. dunno if there are dummy bidders (or maybe they're just plain dumb!?!?), but people out there are payin for used parts that cost more than brand new parts! cranksets for example.
it is fun build from the ground up, but can be expensive. but sometimes you can get lucky. what i'd do is look for old complete road bikes and sell off parts you dont want/need. could work out cheaper that way.

condor does cyclescheme. im thinkin bout using my voucher on a new condor road bike. coz its custom build, they charge an extra 10%(?), which must be paid outside the value of the voucher. sounds like anything that needs building have this extra +% slapped on em. i imagine putney cycles does the same for the bob jackson builds. does that mean you can use the credit on just parts and build yourself!?!

i was in your position few mths ago. wanted flipflop but in the end jumped straight onto fixed. its actually a lot easier than i thought. wouldnt go speeding through busy borough high street in pm rush hour just yet tho. but i got used to fixed ridin in just a couple of days riding.
46x16 is alright for fast commute. you'll easily 'cruise' at 30kph

thanks guys.
agree tallsam, white tape wouldve been good. but i wanted to keep it old skool. got a fizik tape from putney cycles (very helpful lot by the way), which i thought would be close to brooks' honey colour...nowhere near honey...bit red! do'h. im too tight to get brooks tape.
kipsy, unfortunately i failed to stay within budget. i think the whole build is under £500. anyway, dont mind it...got me self a nice ride and some valuable experience. makes me want to keep on buildin!

mdizzle i have to say this bike looks great in the flesh!
hey mdizzle. lost you in traffic on the way towards monument. sorry bout that. had to rush off as i was runnin late for basketball out east! anyway, good chat in traffic...oh good luck on the eddy merckx build
looong day for me yesterday. rode from putney to the event, did couple of loops...rode all way out to west ham, played ball for hr and a bit and rode all the way back home. totally knackered. i was swearin my head off at the 47x16 ratio 'climbin up' wandsworth bridge...haha
yep. definitely. but since i dont do looong rides on my fixed, i can live without it. im on the hoods 95% of the time on sportive rides. and its the position i most prefer when climbin
but, in the city, go for the look ;-)
