Finally selling this. It's probably only really good for the frame, i don't know.
23" Carlton 531 frame. think it might be a corsair. 27" wheels. new ish (i.e. i put them on in the last 6 months, they're not ancient) continental ultra tyres, new ish brake pads....
The frame has surface rust, but I think it looks really nice, and some people must agree because i've been complemented on it.... (!)
There is no thread on the left crank as it seized and the pedal only came off with brute force... (needed removing because it had snapped in half). My lbs will give me 40gbp discount for it part exchange, so if it's worth more than that to anyone make me an offer! With one new crank it could be back in service....

1) tyres, 700c for london, ie puncture proof (or as near as possible...)
2) complete bike tool kit (i know this isnt' a great way to get tools, but my tool kit has accidentally ended up abroad with my parents and is effectively not recoverable)does anyone have any suggestions? wiggle seem to have everything discounted at the moment, but i don't want to waste money when i could've got something better.
thank you

Cane Creek SCR-5s F + R. I bought them second hand for £40 from Flatlander thinking they'd fit my frame, but the drop isn't long enough (evidently my frame is large in every sense!). I think the rrp is £100 ish, they're in excellent condition (I was very pleased with them until they didn't fit). Don't want to lose money on them, I could probably ebay them for more but I'm not looking to make money either...
or would swap (plus money, from me to you) for a super-strong, true pair of 700c wheels (rear flip flop hub) (my frame has I think 135mm b/w rear stays).
:) thanks

Hi. thanks for suggestions, haven't been on here for a bit.... too much school.
I'm going to go to BLB this week and see what they have.
My 23" frame has a long long seatpost, so height wise it's ok, but the top tube is too short.
I bid on the 27" argos above, but was outbid - I was also outbid on a roberts 26".ho hum. that's ebay.
The original Bob Jackson was obviously bought by some one who is going to take care of it, so I don't feel too bitter about ringing up the shop the day after he sold it!
BillB your bike sounds interesting, definitely practical but I don't have the tools to be switching out dropouts for track ends.........
I'm now thinking about asking someone to try and find one for me, either these guys or this guy
does anyone else know of anywhere else that might be worth trying?

that carlton above isn't mine, but I have one very similar, here in london. How much do we think it'll go for?
Mine has 27" wheels, so perhaps that one does too.
Don't know whether to ebay it or advertise it. It's not in great shape.......... -
Yeah I was annoyed about that monster Bob Jackson, because it would have been perfect!
I found a 27"(!) Argos 531 tubing, which I hope might be a bargain. Although probably not, since I'm advertising it, but I will have to trust in your good natures - and smaller statures!
The guy says it's a touring bike, I don't know whether it's suitable/sacrilegious to buy intending to chop it up.Any thoughts?

tallsam - interesting that you fit on a 60cm frame, I guess that widens my options for smaller frames. I have an old 59cm (c to c) frame which feels tiny for me, so I think maybe i'd still prefer something larger. Maybe I have long legs. well, I do, but maybe they're disproportionately long....!
Thanks for the offers, but I think I'm looking for more than 60cm...

Hi, I posted here a while ago, and I'm now back in town and looking for a bike. I tried to get that Bob Jackson suggested, he had sold it the week before.
Anyway. I'm back to looking at ebay. I think it would be best for me to get an old road bike (with a decent ish frame) and gradually upgrade/convert it as I learn how and what I want.
I suppose I'm looking for 25" plus frames:
eg this or this on ebay
but I get the impression neither are that great...
all helpful suggestions gratefully received. I think I'm going to be sticking around.

this is probably the right place to have posted this.... sorry. i'm not the most observant :)
Hi, I'm new. Stumbled across this site yesterday.
here's my situation:
I'm looking for a single speed bike for getting around London in September, I'm 6'6" and weigh a correspondingly large amount (16 and a bit stone). I currently have a 23" carlton 531 Reynolds from I think 1979 with 27" wheels (brown ish frame with chrome forks) in a fairly poor state of repair which I inherited from my dad. too small, and consequently I haven't really bothered trying to do anything to it. I don't know what my budget is (i don't really know what's realistic, I'm a student, so I guess as little as possible!! Anyway, I can't do anything much until September as I'm not in London for most of the summer.
If anyone had any thoughts or suggestions they'd be greatly appreciated, thanks Hovis Brown for help so far!

I have never replaced brake cables before. I have decided to keep the cantilever brakes which were on my frame, wiggle/chainreaction etc have a large selection and i don't know what the difference is.
probably these? but will they fit any type of brake lever I have? I currently have dirty harrys an may keep them or get these or similar....
thank you
