My brooks saddle just got stolen outside the Dove on Broadway market. Saturday evening around 9:30. Had it for 6 years and has real sentimental value. Done many many miles on it. Black Team Pro. The one with those large round copper bits on there (whatever they are called). It was even locked with a cable which they cut. It might be easy to recognize as it had a pretty new tension pin (which I just replaced recently) while everything else looks fairly old and worn in. If anyone is offered one or comes across it please let me know. Thanks!!!

I only met fiddy a couple of times. Once we both turned up too late for a ride and were the only ones there, timekeeping really wasn't his thing. Took the day off to pay my respect to the legend and glad I came. Amazing effort by everyone. Thanks to the organizers. rip fiddy.

A friend of a friend is looking for some people to photograph for GQ Japan. Your usual 'cool cycling scene in london' type of article. He is after people and their bikes that look a more stylish than the usual fakenger. Tweed would be great, Rapha will do. Anyway, If someone is interested and can get 3 people and their bikes together dressed smart this week please let me know. well, thanks for that. I was just trying to make a possibly helpful comment. I know scotts space, I know my space. About the same size, same area and I pay a fraction of what he pays in rates. But hey, what do I know. Not my business so I'll fuck off.

That's two years worth...it's taken 14 months for them to value the property...they base it on the size of the space amongst other things and it's almost 2000sq ft...they can only apply the relief to the current years rates not the first year...and the amount of relief varies...it's not instantly 50% for everyone.
I've been on the phone and filled in all the forms....there are some people in my building with almost £10,000 bills.Scott, I don't think thats true actually. We didn't pay the business rates for the first year neither and got the reduction afterwards.It still applied to the first year we paid late. I would just speak to them again. Also you are not renting the whole 2000sq yourself. Your actual work space is not that big. So I guess you would have to share the rates with the others. Anyway, from my experience it really helps to talk to this people, again and again if necessary. Decisions seem to be a bit random there sometimes. It just sounds really wrong to me that you have such a large bill on your plate.

always wear a helmet. even on a quick ride just to the shops. I really don't care if its uncool or whatever. The argument is simple: I never heard that anyone had a disadvantage from wearing one but I heard of many cases where people might have been dead or badly injured if they would not have worn one. Same goes for front brakes. I can ride brakeless but why take the risk? And of course its not just about me. Wife, family, friends...

scott, there must be something wrong with that 7k business rates bill. I run a small business as well, similar size premises as yours, we have a small business discount (half of the normal rate) and pay around 1k per year. That discount would apply to you as well, I am sure. From my experience you can't owe them any more than 1 years rates anyway as they take you to court. You might have done already but maybe speak to the council again. Sounds too much to me, you are not trading as a business for 7 or 8 years yet are you? Anyway, just trying to be helpful.

Hi Dougal, Thanks so much for all the very valuable info. Thats brilliant. I was thinking about going from Harwich to Hook of Holland. Getting to Harwich would take me a day. Then the ferry is about 6 hours from what I have read. Then Hook of Holland is much closer to my place in Germany than Calais but it would all depend if I get some good sleep on the ferry to be fit for another day of cycling. So trying to make it to Gent and then have a proper night sleep in a hotel might be better.

Thanks for the advice. I will avoid the A2 or A20. I have done long distance rides but not much this year. So I might spread it to 3 days. Or just see how it goes.

I am thinking of cycling to Germany within two days. Just a rough idea so far. Leaving london in the evening, getting to Dover early in the morning. take the ferry over to Calais. try to make it to Gent by the evening. stay overnight. next day to Venlo on the Dutch / German border which is where I am from. 335 miles in total.
The longest I have done recently is the Dunwich 120 miles. Should be doable in 2 days but its a long long way.
Anybody got experience? How long to dover? Anyone cycled in Belgium and Netherlands? What are good maps for route planning (can't afford loosing time getting lost)?
Not fixed I am afraid but no carbon neither. steel frame.

She lives in Bethnal Green currently and her best friend lives just on the other side of the street on Broadway market (above the hairdresser) so they could literally chat to each other from the window across the road. Thanks Oliver. The only distinct mark would be that the tension screw underneath was brand new and shiny while everything else was fairly old (and of course that it had taken on the shape of my ass after about 6 years of riding it). I will be down at brick lane tomorrow morning again to have a look. After that I guess I have to forget about it. My next one will be embossed with my name or 'touch and die'.
