bit of a rubbish performance this year but still glad I did it. Rode together with my mate who hasn't done a long distance ride in 10 years. He was riding a pretty rubbish road bike too. It already fell to pieces before we even started. A screw on back brake broke and we spent an hour and a half fixing it (with some great help of another rider). So left London fields as the last ones.
Then we actually managed to catch up with quite a big group of people at some pub. So we thought we can at least ride within a group and don't have to check the route all the time. Big mistake. Just a few miles before the feeding station we missed a turn (just followed some other riders, who missed it as well) and went about 10 miles in the wrong direction. Cycled all the way back and finally made it to the feeding station when they were just starting to pack up. Forgot to mention we couldn't find the feeding station at first as there were no riders around any more and lost time again. And no food left, just some tea.
Spirits were low and it was raining on top. So we decided to ride to the closest point to Ipswich on the route and then decide if we continue or call it off and get the train from Ipswich. Once there we decided to continue. Lots of checking the route, lots of loosing time. Just not good to ride without being in a group and knowing there are very few peope in front and even less behind you.
(well, we overtook the Penny Farthing, but that was about it).So finally got closer to Dunwich. Saw Hillybilly and other forumengers already coming back. Got there and no breakfast left.
Took us more than 10 hours I think but at least we made it. And my mates bike actually survived. Can't say that for his back. Good thing is because the ride was so slow I don't really feel any stiffness or muscle ace today. Next year it has to be sunrise at the beach – not at the half way stop.

a petition would be great but a clear manifesto is essential.......we should then deliver it in style.....i say we get a truck and weld a bike to signify every person thats died in the last few year to it, paint it white and drive it to the majors office followed by a thousand cyclists.
I've cycled across London daily for 13 years and I swear this is getting worse......
Or drive it right into the Majors office...

I think its a very good idea to write a letter with as many signatures as possible. There are already more than 6000 of us on this forum. And that Boris was almost knocked out by a HGV may help.
Problem I see is that one of the main reasons there are so many HGV's on the road is the building of the Olympic Park. I personally don't give a shit about the Olympics if it can safe just one cyclist but its obviously a prestigious Government project. -

Ye sorry I misread... Thought he was overtaking the car...
So ye, the car driver's a cock end.
no the car was overtaking me on the left. But I admit I wasn't riding very confident that minute and a bit far to the left being in the middle lane. It was around Aldgate East just after the roundabout. Its quite busy there and I am not too familiar with that area.
Just to add to this. The other day I stopped quite sharp at a zebra crossing to let two women walk pass and one of them started shouting at me like crazy that I 'would not have stopped'. Seem you are even getting abused when you are actually doing the right thing because people seem to know what you possibly 'would have done' instead of what you just did
Anyway, this thread has been highly interesting to read. Just came back from Switzerland (another much more peaceful place in comparison) Maybe I should emigrate. Or Scott's d-lock holder should be a bit looser so I can draw faster...

Its no big news but I am still shocked by the level of aggression that some car drivers display. Today I was riding admittedly a bit wobbly in the middle of the road and there was a car overtaking me on the left. My arm hit the mirror and turned it in a bit. No dent. no scratch, no big deal. All he had to do was to adjust the mirror again. However, the driver felt it was necessary to shout all kind of abuse at me, the f word, the c word, the lot. Anyway, I apologized, said it was my fault but told him there isn't the tiniest scratch on his car so there is really no need for all the abusive language. That just made it worse. I think the guy would have preferred if he would have killed me actually. And this really isn't the first time this kind of thing happens.
I just wonder is this still normal human behavior? I mean, the normal reaction would have been to ask first, are you ok? Did you hurt your arm? It was absolutely clear that there was nothing wrong with his car, but I could actually have been hurt. I don't want to get into the whole 'what has become of our society?' thing, but sometimes I am really wondering where all the aggression comes from and what's wrong with those people. Am I supposed to HTFU and d- lock his window in return, just because I am living in London? Makes me think. Especially since I just came back from Japan where you don't get any of that at all...

I've been told by a few people here that they used oven cleaner to get rid of the anodized or powder coated surface on bike parts. Basically to make it silver again. Tried it on my brake leaver and it didn't quite work. I used the foam one and on first attempts I left it too long. The colour came off but the metal looked really bad as well. Not smooth anymore.
Apparently there is a liquid oven cleaner that you can dip parts into and the colour surface just flakes off easily. Haven't managed to find that in a shop.
Does anyone here has any experience with this or knows the exact right brand? Don't want to ruin another break leaver.

Yeah I am feeling that orange bridgestone too - so PP what were you impressions of Japan? I have always wanted to go never had the opportunity.
That was fluorescent orange, really nice.
You should go and travel around. Japan is great: nice bikes, good food, friendly people, totally safe, very calming place although tokyo is a bit mad, I love all the contrast between tradition and totally crazy hipster stuff.I go almost every year as my wife is Japanese but still really enjoy it there, especially traveling around to smaller places. It can be done on the cheap as well with a bit of research and if you stay away from those tempting NJS frames. -
buy the cheap dia compe copy, theres a thread somewhere:
http://www.londonfgss.com/thread11771.htmlor pay £375.
your choice reallyfuck £375. I missed this whole thing. When did they hit the shops? Nice look but I am not mad.

Thought I share some images.
Lots of super nice NJS frames around and quite a few italian frames. seen lots of Binachi. Lots of fancy anodized parts in the shops but mostly available here as well. NJS frames just marginally cheaper than here but just more available. Spotted some rather strange brake set ups, seems quite common to have a break on the back and none on the front - crazy. Always amazed to see those tiny locks. Check the 3Rensho, bigger lock but just locked to itself. Had a good time riding in Kyoto (although my rented bike was a bit rubbish). Quite scary to ride on the pavement in both directions. If you are allowed to ride on the road seems to be dependent on how 'professional' your bike is.

agree its a bit pointless. The question was more because they are double straps and one I forced through the pedals (with bit of oil, dirty hands, etc.) so that looks grey and messy and the other looks still brand new. Just my obsession with perfection. I know you guys will say mess up the other one as well but if someone has an idea let me know.
