Hi,
New to the forum. I'll post more about myself in the right place when I get a few moments.
In response to the suggestion to take your own bike. I took mine on Virgin to NYC at the beginning of May to do the 5 Boroughs Bike Tour http://www.bikenewyork.org/
There's no charge on Virgin as long as you pack it properly and you don't go over 2 x 32kg in baggage. I have a huge DHB bag (although it is a bit big for my Pomp) which worked well. At a squeeze it goes in the trunk of yellow cab...which will cost you around $45 plus tip ($10) to mid/downtown manhattan. This is by far the best bet.
BTW if you're in the meat packing district...check out the Brass Monkey http://www.brassmonkeynyc.com Quality boozer run by some irish people. Great selection 20+ of beers on draft from the US and around the world. Not too expensive ($5 a pint) either.
Hope this helps
James
