my case in point, as I said earlier, the bike could be auctioned on ebay afterwards and the money donated to the LCEF.
on that basis alone, I'm in. Although I can see the LCEF having to pay out to jos after this thing falls apart and he ends up being surgically rebuilt..

looks like we got the cash already. if you want more let me know... -

October 1-5, 2008
Barbican Cinema
Barbican Centre
Silk Street, LondonThe Bicycle Film Festival celebrates the bicycle. We are into all styles of bikes and biking. If you can name it-Tall Bike Jousting, Track Bikes, BMX, Alleycats, Critical Mass, Bike Polo, Cycling to Recumbents- we've probably either ridden or screened it. What better way to celebrate these lifestyles than through art, film, music and performance? We bring together all aspects of bicycling together to advocate its ability to transport us in many ways. Ultimately the Fest is about having a good time.

Theres usually loads on the 'bay. 32/40 used to be standard. All Ive got spare right now is an old bayliss unit hub (kinda heavy, but awesome for making weird custom freewheel clusters..) Ive got an old airlite soon to be spare too, but i havent worked out how to get a stripped 3speed block off it yet..
-
how do they do that? i know they are custom bars but is that flange just sitting next to the tuck or is it clamping somehow?
I think its brazed onto the bars before theyre chromed. Those are the bars with the integrated stem right? The stem, bent bars and those cute flanges are all one object that gets chromed. Sachas stuff is just amazing. Its all about the details..

Its an unthreaded fork with a ahead headset on 1 and 1/8th inch tube.
Can you get a new headset that size ?.
Basically want a quill stem and 25.4 bars.
Thankssorry...I wondered why you were having trouble:)
threaded 1 1/8 headsets arent that hard to find. Think old school mtb. I think theres one outside..The problem is you need a threaded fork. again, think old school mtb/my back yard, but youll be lucky to find a 700c version, so you'd have to thread your existing fork. And if you think its hard finding a shop that will cut a 1" steerer thread, try finding one that even still has a 1 1/8 die.
And then you have to find a 1 1/8 quill stem. Not too hard if you want 80s mtb steel in a range of nasty colours, but youre sol for that njs drop stem. Although if you want to make something really nasty i guess you could use a regular 1" quill and the steerer shim from one of the converters i linked to earlier..
25.4 bars will shim nicely into any 26mm road stem though.Theres even a nitto custom shim for exactly this situation.

Advantages?
You have one lying around?Disadvantages? Lots
the main advantage is that when you take off the wheel to fix a puncture or whatever, the wheel will go back to exactly the same place so you won't need to re-align your brake pads.
'cept if youre building a fixed bike theres a reasonable chance you probably wont be using the rear brake, and will probably just remove it
And you can use quick release as you never have to worry about the wheel slipping in the horizontal drops.
Right. except that to get chain tension you'll probably need those horizontal/semi horizontal drops. Unless you use something like the eno hub, which doesnt have q/r because its just not strong enough.
Theyre both great reasons for using vertical drops on geared bikes, or ss bikes with some other chain tension device, but theyre not ideal if youre building a fixed project
There's always the magic gear option, which sheldon talks about here:
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/fixed-conversion.html#vertical
Which kind of works, as long as you dont mind chain stretch destroying your chain tension :(

asm 48x17 is a pretty aggressive gear for riding on the streets, brakeless, with tubs
The 1950 Gillott and I did L'eroica (200k,mostly on unpaved gravel roads) with a 50x20 and tubs. Grip is so overrated.
Right now its got a 23x7 inch pitch, which means I can kick dales ass on the track at vintage day...its a little steep for the road though :(incidentally, dont suppose anybodys got a 9tooth inch pitch cog lying around so i can take it out again? Dont make me fit a brake...

Journalists have forever mid-understood, mis-represented and simply not got subcultures.I dont know. I think there are plenty examples of great journalists documenting subcultures. Hunter S. Thompsons Hells angels book, for example. But they all come from writers taking time and making an effort to understand that culture.
I do take your point. This is a frickin' newspaper. On a Sunday. Its easy like sunday morning entertainment for people who got wasted on saturday but want to prove they didnt quite destroy all their brain cells. What were we expecting?
As bikesnob said:
If you're unfamiliar with the [new york] Times, it's sort of an obituary for subcultures, in that once yours appears there then it's already dead.I'm sure Ms.F. is a perfectly nice person. She seems to be. And I like journalists. I used to be one. I still live with one. I just have no interest in collaborating with media I have no editorial control over. Media whos primary aim is to sell their brand/product on the back of my culture and (mis)represent it according to the percieved values of their readers. I'm glad you mentioned the Mail. I like to hope it'd have been an easier call to just hang up if they'd called instead of the Observer.
Incidentally, over on MovingTarget, theyre debating the ethics of messengers appearing in a McDonalds commercial...
