Yeah I am into trying that shizzle too - slicks for winter / knobblies to join my mud-loving mates (but they wear body-armour! eek!).
I just bought a pair of 26 inch wheels - rear has a White Industries ENO hub so can fix / SS any frame. I also bought a resprayed pre-2001 GT steel frame that I know is too small for me! But we'll see what happens..
If you can get a bike/frame that she likes and fits her well, then perhaps get a ENO built up? The hubs can be gotten for much less over in the states than here ($120 vs. £110).
SS is a trend in MTB too so I would suspect that the off-the-shelf bikes have similar drawbacks to 700c ones..? -

Yeah - I'm almost 6'3" but inside leg is silly long - 35-36 inch! Erm... its a shame that frame is a bit £££s and scruffy otherwise looks like a great fit - short TTube etc.. I would have to faff about drilling that fork (Try finding a 1 inch fork with 35cm of steerer!) but hopefully some other fellow lanky bloke will take advantage... unless you are suggesting that I buy it?? anyone?.... hmm...?

Best:
Brian Rourke frame+fork - second hand. I love the 'Birds Custard' colour scheme and it rides nice. (Can be seen stacked 3 behind Cornelius' brushed mystery metal frame in that thread.)
Campy Record Pista Hub tied and soldered to a tub rim + Continental Sprinter Gatorskin Tub. So light + stiff! From my sensei Momentum-San. Has finally got me fixed after months and months faffing around!
Worst:
Flouro-yellow Tioga toe clips and matching zefal bottle cage from Ebuy. waiting for my crappy bike to be assembled I don't know if I love or hate them yet.
Half-link that snapped pulling away from the lights from CONdor. Chain was making funny sound for 2-3k before - it was raining and I didn't stop to check it- d'oh! -

The very same day that my rear brake cable snapped when SS I was unable to stop at some lights and crashed badly (also some rider error), fractured my patella, wrote off a frame, and caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage to an innocent car driver. If I had 2 brakes I almost certainly would have been OK..
Confession: Even after recovering I ran SS with only a front brake (being cheap) for a couple of weeks - but very carefully and being super-aware of road hazards. I feel better now I've got that off my chest. Whew!
Good idea! can it be a night-ride too?
