Thanks for the responses.
It seems that adjusting the L&H screws may not be the solution. The chain is not slipping off the freewheel - ie no over or undershifting is occuring. The gears are shifting correct.
The slipping happens in any gear so don't think it is worn teeth on the cassette.
Chain tension or arm tension sounds closer to the problem. When I turn the pedals the chain just doesn't have enough tension to take hold of the rear cassette. How do I resolve this? Would I still need to adjust or reindex cables?
have a look on youtube by searching 'adjusting rear derailleur cable tension' and there are a few videos that will show you how to do it. also, as was mentioned, your cable might have rusted inside its housing, so it'd be worth checking that. you can adjust the tension all you want, but if the cable is sticking, you'll always have problems.
good luck.

I'm desperately looking for a Tiger OS X operating system disc that would work on my powerbook g4.
Tried to restore it from the copy i have but it has some deep scratches and the installation quits near the very end.
Tried installing 10.5 but it wont take it.
Deadlines at uni are closer and closer...
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ps. Polishing a dvd with toothpaste to get rid off scratches- anyone tried that?
Bigben i think had a similar request, so try PMing him.
as for toothpaste, i wouldn't use it as it has a very slight grit. i found that the oil from the side of my nose works sometimes.

Mr Hovis.. That link on handlebar wrapping is no working.. Which I was searching since I'm trying to make some Almarc style bar wraps. First efforts are promising, in patent black on cinelli retro's.. I am going to go over to the classifieds this week, get out my first offerings, and get some feedback. I'll do this unless someone tells me otherwise? I have black and dark brown leathers, and a very heavy black suede to work with at the moment. Maybe someone really keen will just PM me? First dibs is free, then £10 for next few pairs on this forum only. Hard to find right (proper Almarc style) leather, and am still learning the best stitching & sticking methods really. A new thread size will do the trick for me now,
I have searched t'net, and there's precious little on Almarc methods. Loads of moans about the distructions issued with the Toshi (see here's a decent blog on them) and price of Velo O's but it seems shellac is the way to go with old bar covers
fixed the link for the parktool site on wrapping bars. have a look at the VO Sew-On Leather Bar Covers here: http://www.freshtripe.co.uk/Freshtripe/Grips%20%26%20Tapes.html
might be useful if you're looking at Almarc style wrapping...

This happened to me before. I got a replacement from Condor without any problem. if you still have the two bits of the silver spacer, bring them in and they'll get you a new one. should be pretty cheap as well.
a narrow nut would work, but only temporarily while you get it sorted. you could probably move over one from another track hub if you've got a spare set.
good luck.

it's not like his usual work though.
