anyone used this:
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360031134&N=Cyclaire%20Plus%20Pump%20With%20Carry%20CaseYup, I have one. It pumps up to 120 psi without too much aggro, but it takes a little getting used to. The cord could do with being a little tougher too - mine's beginning to wear out and catches every now and then.
Not sure whether I'd heartily recommend it, but I prefer it to any other mini pumps I've used. It's not that light either.

not really, as the whole point of GI is to be able to compare gears among different wheels sizes, the 700 one will be even lower, i would guess at around 70gi for 52/19
I was assuming he'd decided on 44/16 by trying it on his normal bike (presumably with 700c). By relative, I meant the wheel size is academic if they're the same.

If you're going down the self-build route then it's worth checking out freecycle. I'm just about to pick up an old road bike which I'll probably just strip for parts (in fact, I may have a spare frame in that case...)
Alternatively, my local dump always has a couple of suitable frames which they will try to sell you for £20, but you could probably knock them down to a tenner.

Alternatively, you can just mess around with the spacers (if you have enough room on the axle and between the dropouts) to recentre or offset the wheel to improve chainline.
We just did the same here at work with an old freecycled frame and rear wheel, except we're running it as a suicide hub with a fixed sprocket. No redishing necessary.
Having said that, this our work hack, which has so far cost us zero pence, and will be used to go down to Condor or meetings without worrying too much if it gets nicked (though flourescent orange and yellow is not that nickable). I wouldn't personally do it on a bike I wanted to use for any significant mileage.
