bit late, but in case it helps. looks like the blue bike has a slightly different model stem than yours, which I have here, i'll attach a photo. the clamping area does not have parallel edges like on yours, dunno which came first or which one is more prone to failure, but i suspect they will behave quite differently.

yeah, thinking a bit harder, I can see how the cone being trapped byt the wedges would be beneficial. also just realising some effort should be put in against spinning if the extension is to have any of the steerer clamped to it, and that's always going to be tricky with a fixing that can be loosened through rotation... on balance I'm starting to agree it's a bad idea altogether.

decent idea that, i have access to a lathe, so I could make the part, I guess the harder thing is to find the expanding part for a 1" steerer...
Edit:
This is promising, says 22.2 min diamter which is the id of a 1" steerer I think.

https://a.aliexpress.com/_mqnsrT8Edit2:
thinking about it, I'm trying to see what the advantage of the compression system is if you already have a star nut in there. Could push it down further to have more connection with the steerer... will try that first. @DisappointingBob have you got a star nut? -

What rivnut should I use in an aluminium bike frame? ('94 cannondale M500)
Got a spinner on the downtube bottle cage mounts. I got the bolt out, I have a dremel, I have a friend with a rivnut setter that can do M5.
Just need to source the correct rivnut? anything else I'm missing?
Also I haven't got the bike apart right now, but I seem to remember the downtube junctions with BB housing and head tube only have small openings... any tricks to not have a rattly bike? -

my first mistake was to assume there was any metal involved beyond the steerer. plastic headset cover with a plastic cone ring.
the cap ended up riding over the cone ring, doesn't seem to have sustained damage thanks to the slits in it. probably could have just taken out the soft plastic ring out with a pick and avoided all this nonsense 😅

thanks, i'll try the penetrating oil + heat tomorrow.
what's throwing me is there's no split in the ring.I've narrowed it down to 2011 kona dew, and the specs only say "CH" when it comes to the headset spec. trying to find a manual or something is not super easy as a result. does CH mean something?
-
kona dew, circa 2010 ish.
the steerer is a bit rusted, and the headset cap isn't coming off.
I'd expect to see the split cone ring here right??
the middle area of the cap is metal, the cover is plastic. the plastic outer turns, but the inner ring stays stuck to the steerer.
done a bit of the hammer and block of wood routine, no effect.
any ideas? -
Just in case, before I break out the spray can. Given the condition of mine, I'm definitely happy to take on chipped paint etc as long as it's mechanically sound.
There are a couple bits of surface rust on the basket (see picture)
Also got the struts and clamps and screws, they're all sound, no rust.
Missing the rubber bits, but if we swap, you keep yours, I'll use inner tubes. Thanks!
Tidy build, great price! pity I'm not in the market right now.
