I went to Bristol yesterday in search of materials and tools. In my heavily laden backpack of wood planes and hardwood, I bring back this great find! Eucalyptus deck planking from the SS Great Britain, the whopping steamship in Bristol. They are selling several pallets of it at the Wood Recycling Coop. I am looking forward to making something with it.

I really like the repeating figures in the last one :)

Another update: couch, marble tabletop….and work bench!
The workbench room has a dust sheet now so it’s ready for some woodworking, now I just need to find materials. Does anyone local know of a good place to find affordable hardwood? Bristol has the wood recycling coop, which would be perfect, but I don’t have a car.

Basic internals and the grinder unit. I cut the stock shaft in half and mated it to a threaded rod at the top and bottom using glue and a collar(that takes up the hole interior space of the column). These collars seem to be stuck now as well... Ridiculous object.

long pepper grinder update:
Thanks to @Thrasher's compliment, Ive gone and collected it from a friends where I dumped it a couple of years ago. It broke shortly after its inaugural cacio e pepe party and has since sat unnused. It was pretty poorly engineered from the beginning so now I'll give it some love.
It was lathed out of 9 individual pieces of jelutong, and it has come unglued between two of them, revealing its internal pipe. This pipe, at 1.5cm internal diameter is way too small to hold both the pepper and 'driveshaft.' The bottom 6in is bored out to hold the CrushGrind unit, which is fed from the top. I will take it apart to give a better idea of whats going on inside... Maybe someone here has a good idea on how to make this thing work better. Standby

I’m selling an old 58cm Stigmata frame. I’m currently building another one up in my size and I just happened to like the parts that came on this one, so I scavenged it. It’s not beautiful but with some sanding and polishing it could look like their factory raw finish. There are some stickers and it used to be orange, which you can see in a few places. No major scratches or dents. Ah and it’s super duper light. Hello! first real week in the shop over and here’s what I’m working on going into week 2.

1. An old Santa Cruz stigmata cx bike. I bought this lovely NOS frame off of @D_Mars and it’s so light! I can’t get over how light it is. I brought a slightly scrappy Stigmata(seen in original post) back with me from California and am swapping the parts over. Just a coincidence that they are both stigmatas, it was a good deal and had nice parts(but too big). I lived in Santa Cruz for a while so I’ve got a soft spot for bikes made there. I think this might have been one of the last models welded in their hq? More to come…

2. I’ve been carrying around a little point n’shoot camera with me for the last few years with the idea of making films out of ‘street cinematography.’ I’ve captured a shit load of videos with it, but only a few ‘films’ have emerged (which is fine by me, I might just be into the act of recording rather than sorting through footage). But lately I’ve been lazy with it/I’m too shy to be a street photographer and the hip bag+camera combo have become somewhat of a dead weight. Not any more!

I am making a gadget to help my filmmaking practice in order to introduce some ‘random’ into the hunt. The device will give me a buzz/beep at a random time every day, at which time I will capture something interesting in my surroundings. Maybe this will cut down on the guilt inducing fatigue of always looking for the perfect shot and never getting it. Easy right…

It’s actually fairly hard to learn how to design a circuit and a pcb in just a couple of days. So I had a couple of hotshot silicon valley friends guide me on the circuit and I made a mess out of the pcb. Everyone’s using 90° and 45°s on their boards, but nobody is laying down their traces free form. Expect the messy pcb to be the next hottest trend in the consumer electronics market. It will run off of a raspberry pi pico.

This isn’t done yet. I intend on adding a method of collecting “true random
” and redesigning the object into a more usable form factor.

I am interested to hear your thoughts.
